While the album is rooted in Ennio Morricone’s dusty spaghetti western soundtracks and Daniel Lanois’ high-lonesome ambient, songs like the spacy “El Fantasma” and the kaleidoscopic title track ground their psychedelic drift in the intense chemistry between the two brothers and the way they play off each other supernaturally. Sonido Cósmico is not so far out as to thoroughly shake up their sound. Still, its heavenward momentum makes for a fresh new entry in their catalog, presenting just enough of a perspective shift to feel like an innovation without compromising the creative identity they’ve developed over their years playing together.

While mostly pensive throughout, each moment on ‘Sonido Cosmico’ feels different from the other; each picture evoking something different from the imagination. It’s hard to find a track not to like here.

Sonido Cósmico is gorgeous. This music retains Hermanos Gutiérrez's core musical fingerprint. That said, its collaborative strategy extends the brothers' reach in exploring genres, rhythms, colors, textures, and production techniques.

The intimate strings that lace the title track's elegiac sequence of pedal-effect guitar movements is a fresh high, the shadow-playing six-string storytellers surpassing the limitations of their intimate format. [Aug 2024, p.89]
