  • Summary: The second solo album for the folk singer who was born in Chicago but is now based in Britain.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 4 out of 5
  2. Negative: 0 out of 5
  1. Uncut
    80
Boden is a true original who has crafted an engaging album that's no easy listen, but worth sticking with. [May 2009, p.79]
  2. Mojo
    80
Jon Boden delivers an audacious yet subtle solo masterpiece. [Apr 2009, p.108]
  3. Anyone familiar with Boden's usual extrovert singing will be amazed by his restraint and, despite outbursts of percussive grunge, the arrangements are primarily gentle and acoustic.
  4. That this glorious album will be remembered long after this week's hyped offerings are forgotten is a testament to its power.
  5. The lyrics are often infuriating--who is the mysterious preacher in several songs, and what is the spooky, neo-traditional ceremony of Beating the Bounds?--but there are some fine songs here.
