Confident, confessional pop from masters of the craft. [Jan 2026, p.103]

Ultimately, Small Talk is about embracing life without bitterness and finding renewal in the smallest moments. It doesn’t try to surprise you; it tries to stay with you. That, in its modest, luminous way, is what makes it beautiful.

Equally appropriate for heartbroken solitude, low-key hangouts, or peaceful Sunday afternoons, even at its most conflicted Small Talk feels like a warm embrace.

Ehrlich’s resplendent falsetto is still at the centre of everything, but there’s a serious depth here in the writing that elevates the material above the group’s previous two albums.

There’s a wholesome vocal harmony here, a poignant flute and jazzy, syncopated drum beat there, and an overall comfortable atmosphere to make the forlorn subject matter go down a bit easier.

It's not always easy to get emotional purchase on these songs, but the hint of something moving beneath the immaculate surfaces makes the challenge worthwhile. [Dec 2025, p.86]

In its best moments, Small Talk is pleasant background noise. .... The good news is that the songs don’t get worse from there. The bad news is that they stay almost exactly the same. Each track sways into the next at a similar tempo and with similar intensity, which is to say none.
