The trio's strongest asset has always been inspired, thoughtfully crafted pop songs, which Share the Joy should finally make clear.

So where the Share the Joy may inhabit a broad spectrum of emotions, inflicted with anxiety in places and rife with The Vivs' trademark wit, ultimately, it can be viewed as a shiny beacon of joy in an ever growing climate of discontent.

Not many bands can recover from a disastrous album and come back better than ever. Thanks to some hard work and good choices, you can add Vivian Girls to that short list.

If you get past this wall of noise, only bothering to burden Share the Joy for a freaky sixteen seconds, you'll find a record contained within its little motto, the noise dropped, the joy shared tenfold, the delightful "Dance (If You Wanna)" circling our heads, encouraging us with a smile.

What's key is they remain as disaffected as brother band Crystal Stilts, and cling to longing, woozy Slumberland vibes without fear of brighter tones, trendy surf and obvious, intelligible lyrics (little more than an amusing addition).

Share the Joy represents growth for Vivian Girls, though they're not totally there yet.

If Share the Joy is the direction Vivian Girls are going in, I'm interested in seeing how it plays out.

It has taken Brooklyn's Vivian Girls three albums to expand their musicality beyond the (unquestionably ace, but repetitive) garage racket that characterised their last two.

The girls have made strides in bookending the album with tracks that are longer than six minutes-quite different from its usual two to three minutes-but the next step is to use the extended time to explore what else they could do with it.

It's hard not to acknowledge that Share the Joy is Vivian Girls' best crafted, most cohesive effort yet.

The overall result is pleasant yet hardly exceptional.
