    When they play to their traditional strengths, most exhilaratingly on anthem-to-be Cryin’ In Your Beer and the breezy Caught By The Wind, they’re all walloping choruses and galloping guitars, but when they take chances things get really intriguing.

    Stereophonics don’t have the lyrical potency of their earlier incarnation, often erring on the side of grand generalisation--as is the way when you have to appeal to enough people to fill your next arena tour. But frontman Kelly Jones has got one of the damn finest voices in rock ‘n’ roll, and that’s surely worth the price of admission in itself.

    While the U2-style arena-rock impressions that dogged Keep The Village Alive persist in places here, elsewhere Scream Above The Sounds finds Kelly Jones in more reflective mood, resulting in a more appealing balance of head and heart overall.

    This album is good, but not much more. However, it excites me to see the phonics still coming up with new amazing sounds 20 years into theirThis album is good, but not much more. However, it excites me to see the phonics still coming up with new amazing sounds 20 years into their career. I think they sound best when they take bold steps and include new instruments and styles. This is highlighted through "what's all the fuss about", which features some beautiful saxophone instrumentals. I'd say the band needs to include more bold new sounds like these in their coming record. Besides that, there are some pretty good songs like geronimo and taken a tumble. Very diverse sounds on this album so I do think stereophonics are trying to appeal to a wide range of people with one record. All in one night is great sounding and strikingly anthemic, but fails (and is ruined) by the lyric writing/singing. All around a good few great songs and a right and promising step in what's to come.… Expand
