Even if they’re building with familiar materials, it’s the way they’re torn apart and reconstructed that makes it feel like Fievel is Glauque is uninterested in recreating the past. Instead, on Rong Weicknes, they’ve made something with a pulse, contemporary and alive.

The duo’s latest, Rong Weicknes, is their prettiest, poppiest rush-hour prog-jazz clusterfuck yet.

Overall, it ends up somewhere between Julia Holter and Black Country, New Road’s chamber-pop fantasias, Stereolab’s quirkiest moments and the psych-funk symphonics of Rotary Connection – which is to say it’s actually in its very own peculiar corner of pop.

The songs on Rong Weicknes are also longer than the rapid-fire tracks of their previous two albums. Giving the songs space allows for tricks like the kaleidoscopic way instruments morph into each other. Without a frenetic pace to keep up with, singer Ma Clément also has more of a showcase for her vocals.

The result is a revelation. “As Above So Below” and the joyous, sax-assisted “Love Weapon” positively glow, Clément’s gentle chanson like a golden cord that guides you through their labyrinthine twists and turns. [Dec 2024, p.35]

[These 14 jazz-pop miniatures offset whimsical structures and playful flaws with sharp hooks. [Dec 2024, p.94]

The finished product is so muddled in many of its would-be fleeting spaces as to elicit the phrase: Just because you can doesn't necessarily mean you should.
