The resulting record is a gorgeous, quietly stunning synthesis of sound and theme, brimming with the energy of a long-lost classic that’s been dug up, dusted off, and given a fresh polish (shoutout to the audio engineers for the crystal clarity of their mixing and mastering here). Its throwback presentation might seem humble and slight on the surface, but it shouldn’t detract from the focused insights and lovely imagery Jordan conjures.

Snail Mail is back with more heart, more soul, and nuance than ever before to offer a view into her growing outlook.

It’s a step forward, but one that feels entirely organic. Our little dramas and interpersonal frictions can often mask our own insignificance, but if we let that go then there’s beauty to be seen and Ricochet is an album that’s attentive to that fact.

Ricochet is an irresistible album full of simple but effective song-craft decisions that add up to a next-level moment for the artist.

While the inspirations are obvious, ‘Ricochet’ isn’t simply a cobbled together pastiche; those inspirations are greater than the sum of their parts, and often complemented by big string arrangements for a lush and expansive soundscape.

Ricochet finds Snail Mail lifting off and soaring, the fraught restlessness of her early work channeled with poise and confidence into a daring new indie rock sound.

The sparkling closer “Reverie” and the excellent “Butterfly” deserve special mention, but honestly, side B is uniformly strong. The tragedy of Ricochet is that it follows such a feeble side A.

Ricochet lives in a contemplative, midtempo state where every song has weight, melodies can blur together, and meaning is found in those few anchors that help one push through the rest of it all.

Adapting the lushest textures from'90s alt.rock, grunge and shoegaze, most strikingly on "tractor Beam" and "Dead End", Jordan is ready to take the next step. [Apr 2026, p.36]

To make the personal sound universal is no small feat, but there’s a fine line between universality and sounding like your songs could be anybody’s.

Questionable sequencing and some strange production choices (layers of synths and suffocating syntheric strings) sometimes make Jordan sound like a guest artist o her own album. [Jun 2026, p.86]

Blunt colloquialisms can detract from philosophical musings, and sunny chords sometimes overshadow introspective lyrics.

While the sharp electric riffs pair neatly with the existential themes of the 26-year-old's lyrics on Agony Freak, its sounds are a little generic in the realm of contemporary indie-rock. Jordan does much better with the warm, Sundays-inspired jangle chords in Tractor Beam and my Maker, the album's high points. [Apr 2026, p.109]

These songs remain uncharacteristically conventional in structure and instrumentation as a disappointing result.
