There are plenty of bands doing roughly the same thing as Ringo Deathstarr, but there are few who do it as well as they do. Pure Mood is proof of that.

It’s not perfect--there are moments, such as during "Old Again", where my concentration has wavered--but when it hits the spot ("Big Bopper", "Guilt", "Acid Tongue"), it’s an absolute tour-de-force.

That’s the thing about shoegaze: it’s more about creating a pure mood than an instant connection, and Ringo Deathstarr’s mood is more playful than most.

Granted, there are a couple of by-numbers moments that elongate Pure Mood by a couple of songs too many but such instances of self-indulgence are kept to a minimum, and ultimately the album becomes much more rewarding as a result.

It could have been full steam ahead here, but Pure Mood instead chugs forward gently. [Jan 2016, p.112]

Once you’ve laboured through the fug of distortion on Boys in Heat, there’s nothing much contained within. But there are terrific moments elsewhere.
