    A bewitching album. [Mar 2025, p.31]

Vocal melodies take a back seat to the overall 'vibe', but it's a groovy corner of the musical universe to spend time in. [Apr 2025, p.87]

With tracks that demonstrate Bell’s versatility by encompassing spirit-of-Madchester-infused workouts, lush electronica and krautrock. Impressively, the album does this while maintaining coherence, never seeming less than the sum of its parts.

The essence that Bell distills on Pinball Wanderer is one of happy exploration, indeed wandering from one creative idea to the next with very little second guessing or restraint. If there are any unfinished thoughts or untidy loose ends in that approach, they’re easily outshined by the feeling of radiant joy that carries the album.

At just eight tracks and a 30 minute running time, it does feel a bit slight at times. Yet that’s a minor quibble: much of Pinball Wanderer shows just what Bell can produce when he’s given a rare spotlight.

Yet for all the ideas, it’s a patient album: the deft funk of ‘Music Concrete’ takes its time, with a muttered repeated title, while ‘Space Station Mantra’ pulses and fizzes skywards, bringing things full circle with more motorik murmuring.

The album's experimental second half verges perilously on sketchy, but serene motorik closer Space Station Mantra offers a finely modulated sow of its maker's tastes and instincts. [Mar 2025, p.103]
