Ghetts secured his place in the conversation around the greatest UK rappers years ago; ‘On Purpose, With Purpose’ sets the bar higher once again.

This time round the likes of Lancey Foux, Unknown T, Skrapz and Tiggs Da Author inspire and complement rather than distract from an artist settling into the elder statesman role he’s been primed for since day dot. In their company the righteous gospel sermonising of “Double Standards” shines, and “Blessings” reveals itself as the most potent earworm I’ve had the pleasure of contracting this year. ‘On Purpose, With Purpose’ shows an artist who continues to be authentic, whilst also realising that at this stage of his career he needs to adapt his style in order to achieve greatness.

This record is the perfect display of how to make grown rap music without soiling a legacy that has taken decades to build. If this evolution continues, Ghetts may finally produce the classic album that has escaped him thus far.

It's a shade overlong and overuse of certain choruses dampen the calculated effect of a few songs, but these flaws are barely noticeable when set against how gut-punch raw and earnest the writing is.

This is a well-crafted collection that could maybe do with a couple more heaters, but will keep the wider audience he picked up with Conflict of Interest happy.
