Embracing the participatory rather than lurking in personal mistrust, and supplementing their formerly disconsolate narratives with unusually contented flourishes, these diverse new manifestations substantially demonstrate that Xiu Xiu still exist in a universe of their own design, but that maybe they’re ready to temporarily negotiate ours once more.

The presence of these co-conspirators empowers the songs, but some of the duets are more straightforwardly fun. [Apr 2021, p.64]

‘Oh No’ is the strongest album since 2012’s ‘Always’. This definitely is beautiful music for hard times.

While the LP reaches its darkwave apotheosis with a Neubauten-like cover of The Cure’s “One Hundred Years”, glimmers of lightness and tenderness make for a surprisingly rich listening experience, one that’s closer in spirit to Scott Walker’s Bish Bosch than Xiu Xiu’s past provocations. There are plenty of moments among these 15 songs that are devastating in a way that’s unique to Xiu Xiu, but also moments that leave me frustrated and baffled. Essentially it’s business as usual for this brilliant yet confounding band. They challenge you to turn away, yet reward the brave and patient listener with flashes of startling beauty.

It’s clear that OH NO will not be remembered as one of Xiu Xiu’s most stellar records. Yet, as usual with collaborations, it’s likely that each listener is likely to find their own tracks they ditch, just like different ones will stand out, given the varying degrees of artistic touches these additional musicians bring with their own aesthetics and histories.

These duets are, of course, not standards. The production is exceptionally murky – mostly collaborators move through the dark, uncertain world Stewart manifests with his Scott Walker-like crooning of glossolalia.

Incredible album. Saint Dymphna and Sad Mezcalita are among their best songs ever.

This is how I'm feeling right now. It''s magnificent the way they turned the pain (abuse and traumas collected in Jamie Stewart's memories) into art, but of course, as Fiona Apple would say, "there's nothing poetic about it". Fully valid. I see this as powerfull and enjoyable to go against the parameters of what people should listen to, along the exprimental genre. "Sain Dymphna" and "Goodbye For Good" are the perfect examples of the lyrical content Xiu Xiu has been delivering for long time, and we're here to listen AND celebrate them.
