the vocals are dreamy and heavenly and the sounds portray mood shifts which not many artists can do. Lana leads you through happiness in love song and mariners apartment complex, emotional turmoil in california, the next best american record, and bartender, where she says she is trying to keep her love alive and the music correctly portrays this tension. The album ends with happiness is a butterfly and hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have—but i have it where there is a resolution. She is trying to find happiness or rather, catch it like a butterfly but it keeps running from her. the last song shows how she still has “monsters under her bed she could never fight off” she still feels sadness at a time in her life where she should be happy because of past memories. “they write that i’m happy they know that i’m not, but at best u can see i’m not sad.” the resolution to this story lana tells through her beautiful album shows a whirl of emotions that she’s trying to deal with, all while being hopeful for the future and trying to find happiness. this album deserves album of the year because it isn’t made of fillers like other pop albums, but has depth and meaning into it and tells a story that only lana **** del rey could write. period. Those orchestral sounds of movies from the 60s of the old and glamorous hollywood, Del Rey again demonstrates that he does not need bizarre sounds to create a masterpiece.

A lyrical and instrumental masterpiece that balances gorgeous acoustics with moving piano ballads. It’s almost a mix between honeymoon and ultraviolence.

Chances are this is Del Rey’s most mature work so far. Very soothing, very musical album. A pièce de resistance with many good references. Zero skips.

Lana del rey just did her best album, she combined an incredible concept and found the greatest saund to define it, its someting so different from what she has done, the message is all free to perceptions, and this music just gives so much light in terms of what the industry is now aclaiming, which is so sad that his artist cant get enough of what they deserve.

She could’ve done better. It feels like a really long drawn out song that just won’t end. She seriously needs to change it up a bit. Same old music.

Lana Del Rey continues to amaze me. every album is incredible and well put together works of art. this album for me is my favourite. her songwriting has escalated with every album and she sticks to her roots with the vintage aesthetic and never strays away from who she is. i love her with all my heart and this album is the refresh we need from pop chart music.

It's a remarkably sharp pop record that retains her fascination with pop-culture iconography and the rosey simplicity of a post-war America where classic rock and blue jeans ruled and takes them to much deeper places. ... Think of it as an hour-long car ride peeling down the highway with classic rock blaring out of the radio and no real destination in mind other than where your impulsive nature might take you.

A thematically rich record, heavy on mood and elegantly written in a way that positions Del Rey between Eve Babitz and Carole King. There are beguiling and evolving melodies underneath the spare piano and acoustic arrangements. [Nov 2019, p.24]
