Non-Believers slips masterfully between vantage points and emotions.

Among many highlights, the best and brightest is the Guided By Voices-do-Status Quo elation of Box Batteries, an elegy for youth designed to live forever. [Jun 2015, p.88]

Non-Believers offers up a more fragile, exposed side of the songwriter. While the catchy, jangly hooks that have defined Superchunk for so long are present on these 10 tracks, they feel more tentative, gentle--even slightly unsure of themselves.

Solo work, if he can keep making records this special, should be where he focuses his prodigious talents.

McCaughan has a gift for capturing simple, affecting moments without tipping the scales to sentimentality.

Listening to Non-Believers resembles the experience of watching ’80s movies as an adult, when the adolescent agony and drama is still relatable and realistic--but yet (thankfully) no longer an ongoing present concern.

Non-Believers may disarm at first, but after a couple of listens this will quickly hook into the ears and heart as every Mac McCaughan venture does. This is his dusk album.

The Superchunk frontman journeys to the early '80s, where punk was dissolving, songs were becoming introspective and straightforward rumble of rock was being corrupted by synthesisers. He does it with precision. [Jun 2015, p.78]

The only thing that’s the least bit ambiguous is the supposed theme that inspired the songs, a fascination fraught with themes of discovery, isolation, alienation, and ambiguity. Heady stuff, for sure, but propelled by enthusiastic melodies, Non-Believers becomes the kind of album that can woo even the most reluctant listener.

Listening to Non-Believers is like clasping hands with an old friend: It’s warm, accessible, and sweetly familiar.

It sounds like a Mac McCaughan record, which is a well-established concept even if this is technically the first Mac McCaughan record.

Whether you’re into it or not, it’s hard to discredit the remarkable solidness of the album, which, against most preconceptions, exists far outside the world of Superchunk. It’s everything a side project should be.

Non-Believers is an easy record to enjoy, but there isn't much more going on.
