Like much of Callahan’s finest work, this is an incredibly contemplative yet focused collection of songs from one of the most talented raconteurs of his generation.

Nearly seven years and three albums after Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest, the first record to emerge from Callahan the family man, listeners should probably be acclimatized to his mid-life openness by now, but even by his recent standards, My Days Of 58 exhibits a clarity, a directness – even, on the tender depressive ramble of Stepping Out For Air, a sharp vulnerability. Arguably his most intimate and revealing album yet. [Mar 2026, p.102]

My Days Of 58 is an unassuming delight and a further feather in the cap of one of most enduring songwriters of his generation.

Accompanied by the group that toured with him for his 2022 YTIJA38 album, together with contributions from a select group of musicians. Their combined improvisational skills give Callahan the room he needs to expand upon how he throws his words out in songs - at times he comes across like a resurrected Lou Reed or a Van Morrison in full Astral Weeks flow. [May 2026, p.60]

While the low-key tone of My Years of 58 may dampen its power a bit, the album sees Callahan facing down mortality with his signature candor and sense of humor.

On My Days of 58, there are moments where the approach pays dividends. In the end, though, it leaves the latest entry in Bill Callahan’s ever-expanding discography feeling more interesting than inspired.
