Like much of Callahan’s finest work, this is an incredibly contemplative yet focused collection of songs from one of the most talented raconteurs of his generation.

Callahan takes a stand for humanity against soulless automation (“Computer”), playfully settles on a backup resting place in Wisconsin (“Lake Winnebago”), and deciphers his bizarre dreams with gusto (“And Dream Land”). None quite stack up against the best songs on this record, but all are worthwhile diversions with charms of their own.

Accompanied by the group that toured with him for his 2022 YTIJA38 album, together with contributions from a select group of musicians. Their combined improvisational skills give Callahan the room he needs to expand upon how he throws his words out in songs - at times he comes across like a resurrected Lou Reed or a Van Morrison in full Astral Weeks flow. [May 2026, p.60]

He’s released a peach of an album.

My Days Of 58 is an unassuming delight and a further feather in the cap of one of most enduring songwriters of his generation.

As with all Callahan’s work, his immaculate comic timing, pathos and heart are intertwined – the strongly held centre of the maelstrom.

Pairing thoughtful craft with spontaneity is no easy feat, but My Days of 58's songs do it effortlessly.

Callahan emerges from the album with his reputation further enhanced, his artistic trajectory unbroken.

Arguably his most intimate and revealing album yet. [Mar 2026, p.102]

It's hard, then, not to view My Days Of 58 as among his most transparently autobiographical works, as brimming with self-scrutiny and pontification as it is elegant wordplay. [Mar 2026, p.26]

Nearly seven years and three albums after Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest, the first record to emerge from Callahan the family man, listeners should probably be acclimatized to his mid-life openness by now, but even by his recent standards, My Days Of 58 exhibits a clarity, a directness – even, on the tender depressive ramble of Stepping Out For Air, a sharp vulnerability. [Mar 2026, p.78]

My Days of 58 is a weird Bill Callahan album, and a good one.

On My Days of 58, there are moments where the approach pays dividends. In the end, though, it leaves the latest entry in Bill Callahan’s ever-expanding discography feeling more interesting than inspired.

Callahan is particularly unsentimental. His lyrics often bring to mind lab or field notes. His signature deadpan delivery is consistently elusive. The instrumentation sounds unscripted, largely improvised. In this way, 58 captures Callahan at his most unguarded and unrehearsed.

Callahan can give us no answers. But some of us find the struggle, the ride, much more interesting when the answers are lacking.

While the low-key tone of My Years of 58 may dampen its power a bit, the album sees Callahan facing down mortality with his signature candor and sense of humor.
