Those highs could climb higher, the lows could really crawl. But there's no question that Tanlines have found their path forward.

Mixed Emotions falls right into place, then, indulging both musical and emotional nostalgia without falling victim to any particular trend.

Mixed Emotions plays like a great debut.

Mixed Emotions is just the painstakingly crafted, mood-driven long-player we've been waiting for from this immensely talented duo.

Even with Mixed Emotions' tumultuous gestation, Emm and Cohen have overcome, with a lean, lighthearted LP of which Toto would be proud.

Eric Emm and Jess Cohen have produced an album is both substantially intelligent and undeniably fun in equal measure.

Mixed Emotions' has a track for every mood without ever sounding in the least bit forced or contrived... Finger clicking good.

The result is an album that is as notable on its own as it is in the historical chillwave narrative.

Mixed Emotions is a shiny bear-hug of an album--sometimes short on fresh ideas, but never lacking in heart.

Most of these songs are really pretty damn good. Tanlines have never had a problem with the set-up, but it's in the delivery where the occasionally falter.

Meatier than the handful of singles and EPs that have boosted the Tanlines name to date. [No. 86, p.58]

The [album] which flirt[s] with kitsch but never succumb[s] to it, can be unexpectedly poignant.

For all of their sunset tints, fake congas, and overall indulgence in artifice, the songs neither feel cloyingly ironic or haplessly naïve.

Sure the vibes are smooth, but Tanlines work very hard to make it look easy.

Mixed Emotions seems served just too late, and comes off as regrettably stale.

Mixed Emotions achieves what a striking debut should, offering up some strong pieces with a singular identity, while also showing that Tanlines are willing to stretch themselves a bit, even if their experimentation might lead them to some dead ends.

It's hard to say what it all amounts to apart from a collection of partly-cloudy-late-afternoon-sunshine, on-and-off '80s jams.

It's certainly a promising debut, just one hampered by a songwriting scope that strips it of its own vitality rather than informing it.

Sometimes the union flourishes, but at times it's a grab-bag that's fallen apart at the seems. [Apr 2012, p.87]

The scattered approach showcased on this set needs polish and original thought to develop.

There's a comforting softness to the album (only occasionally broken by a stray emotion in Eric Emm's vocals or a danceable tempo) that makes it perfect background music for working away in a cubicle or relaxing after a long day.

Tanlines's debut comes across as well-meaning but overly earnest, overly-invested and trying hard to do many things at once.

Most of the tracks are about as blank and sterile as an airport terminal.

Great album from top to bottom. Not the Same is the standout and most likely to be an earworm.
