It’s relentlessly interesting – a cleverly crafted new noise around every corner.

Is “Missionary” the greatest Snoop Dogg album of all time? No. Is it at least as good as “BODR” though, the album that announced his purchase of Death Row? Absolutely.

An eager act of fan service, the results represent one of his most consistent records from the past 20 years.

Nothing on Missionary is quite as explosive as his classic Dre-helmed confessional “Murder Was the Case.” .... “Pressure,” which sports a wonky bass note and brash snares, finds Uncle Snoop kicking hard bars, rendered impeccable by his patented L.B.C.-by-way-of-Mississippi lilt. It’s just a thrill to hear him rap for two-plus minutes.

While it doesn’t really come close to capturing the lightning-in-a-bottle power of Doggystyle, there’s enough of that original spirit mixed with a modernized production sound to make Missionary one of Snoop’s more enjoyable full album listening experiences in several years.

Dre and Snoop forgot the legacy they created for the West Coast with ‘Doggystyle’ and – although there are flashes of fun – the forgettable collection barely scratches the surface of their legendary status.

While there’s more going on musically on Missionary than on Snoop’s last few releases, but the only thing worse than a mediocre album that’s barely trying is one that tries way too hard.
