There's a mature artistry wide awake beneath the concept. A thorough attention to detail and an obvious reverence for its anachronistic references pay off, conjuring an atmosphere that's as eerie as it is familiar.

The songs are sharper than the slower tracks on the band’s debut, but still prove that Pom Pom Squad is at their best when they come out swinging.

A little of the opening tracks’ emotional impact is lost in their sugary, pixel-perfect presentation - particularly the otherwise punchy ‘Street Fighter’ – but that aside, ‘Mirror Starts Moving Without Me’ is a rewarding listen.

One of the major wins for Berrin on this record is the bold move to that darker aesthetic, which perfectly blends with her ability to explore the more volatile pretensions and aspirations we have when we feel like our backs are up against a wall. It also allows Pom Pom Squad’s grunge and 90s indie rock stylings to have a much greater tonal consistency too.

Even on an album steeped in melancholy, Berrin finds plenty of moments to be cheeky and theatrical, just like fellow teen queen Olivia Rodrigo and new pop star on the block Chappell Roan.

Throughout the highs and lows, the album ultimately invites listeners to join in Berrin’s cathartic journey and embrace their own complexities, searching for solace in a chaotic world.
