Marketable sounds are perpetually repackaged and sold back to listeners creating a seemingly endless cycle of revivals of revivals ad infinitum. YHWH Nailgun break this cycle and, on ‘Magazine’, wholly prove their mettle as a truly original and prophetic act.

Magazine, though, is to me a tremendous next step, as YHWH Nailgun find how much structure and sophistication they can fit into very tiny spaces. If you thought the rototoms were a gimmick, even a good one, they’re gone; if you thought Borzone’s words were inscrutable, they have new relevance and urgency, motivational slogans for the dispossessed.

The result, somehow, is brilliant: uncontrolled chaos, presented in the most controlled of settings.

Here’s a record that’s got people talking. Is it a gimmick? Maybe. But after a few listens, you’re in on the gag, and it’s pretty unsettling.

Despite its problems, Magazine serves as a rallying call, a war cry to rouse the dumbed-down spirit.

Without sounding like a broken record, it’s tough to sit with the overwhelming sensations of these tracks when they are gone before even arriving. The longest track of the record however, at one minute and 36 seconds, feels the perfect length to live with.
