Liquorice radiates a wistful warmth and a nostalgic sense of longing. Duterte is clearly on Hatchie’s wavelength, with deft production that ensures the album remains romantic without tipping into cloying sweetness, dreamy without drifting, and sharp enough to let Pilbeam’s melodies shine without ever feeling fussy or overdone.

Liquorice, meanwhile, is more mature and less immediately palatable, eschewing the fairyfloss hooks of Pilbeam’s earlier work.

Hatchie is moving into interesting territory. [Feb 2026, p.84]
  4. 80
Her introspection has not only led to her most vulnerable and earnest record but also a display of everything she has worked towards over her career.

Filled with highs, lows, and surprises, Liquorice eloquently expresses young love's volatility -- and makes for Hatchie's most consistent music since Keepsake.
  6. 80
Fans of ‘Giving the World Away’ might be disappointed to find that she’s retreated, somewhat, from the ambition and sonic diversity of that release. This kind of sound, though, is what Pilbeam does best; she doesn’t just ape her influences, but channels them with nuance and empathy.
