Closer ‘SMILE’ drops the noise, and embraces beauty; the lilting guitars are pinned down by a dulcet vocal, with Rico’s tender singing voice resonates with beauty. Leaving fans on a softer note, she shows true bravery, and no small degree of self-acceptance.

The record’s most straightforward track, the Doja-Cat-esque ‘On The Low’, which highlights how modern hyperpop-trap is, at its best, Rico Nasty-indebted; or the artsy punk of ‘Crash’, which feels like a sibling to present-day 070 Shake alt-pop. ‘LETHAL’, firmly reasserting the Rico Nasty legacy, is an alluring feat for the US rapper that feels just as trendy as it is against the grain.

While Rico’s wordplay and songwriting on Lethal are solid, there’s a sense she still has a ways to go if she aims to truly stand out amongst her peers. But she’s clearly moving forward musically and personally.

Although she doesn’t carry that refinement throughout all of LETHAL, Rico Nasty gives us glimpses of a rap rockstar with no intentions of slowing down.

LETHAL is, in spirit, a passion project: Rico Nasty sounds like she’s having a blast. Yet certain moments seem dropped in, as if to meet a rebellion quota. .... The album has highlights if you know where to look.

Perhaps mastering a sense of duality is what Rico Nasty is gunning for – harsh and soft, or trap and rock. At the same time, there’s not quite enough sense of focus to suggest that’s the case. Should she find that, or find a way to blur all these sounds into something cohesive and singular, she could be unstoppable.
