This is him using collective dialogue – with a large cast of varied characters – to have fun. And it’s infectious.

The highlights are many, but "Black Flag Freestyle" with That Mexican OT sounds like a direct homage to Memphis greats Three 6ix Mafia.

The beats may occasionally be interchangeable, but several cuts stand out, such as the minimal speaker-blower ‘SKED’ and the menacing ‘Hit The Floor’. Each track features a guest spot, which helps provide their sometimes homogenous nature with personality.

Vol. 2’s braggadocio is countered by the enthusiasm that Curry and his roster of guests bring to the album. Having long since proven his skill as a lyricist, Curry is more concerned with having a good time here. And that also makes for a hell of a good listen.

This mixtape sounds more coherent than its 2012 predecessor, the shroomed-out Tumblr rap artefact King Of The Mischievous South Volume One Underground Tape 1996 . The features are bigger. [Sep 2024, p.60]

Irreverence and wilful expendability means quality control goes out the window. Denzel’s titular mischievousness and biting charisma can do a lot of heavy lifting, but with everyone from TiaCorine and A$AP Ferg (HOT ONE) to Ty Dolla $ign and Juicy J (COLE PIMP) piling in, it’s a turbulent flow. Fortunately, flashes of genius keep shining through.

It’s a sequel to his 2012 come-up tape, with a southern rapper featuring on nearly every track, although pretty much everyone else struggles to match Curry’s charismatic, mesmerising energy. There’s something about his cheeky cadence that’s annoyingly irresistible, no matter how lazy his verses get.
