The new interpretations confirm the timeless quality her songs possess, offering new perspectives on youth as now seen through experienced eyes. It can only be hoped that she has a suite of new songs up her sleeve, for on this evidence she remains one of the very finest vocalists in British pop music.

“Love Resurrection” exhibits a more redemptive, albeit Yazoo-like energy. Later work, too, is transformed, with “Filigree”, from 2013’s The Minutes, now a poignant piano ballad and B-side “Tongue Tied” (from 2002’s Hometime era) getting the electronic polish it deserves. [Nov 2024, p.40]

It’s a textbook example of how to do these kinds of records right. Instead of lukewarm rehashes of past triumphs, Alison Moyet’s approach to her oeuvre is to treat the songs like a new batch of tunes, divorced from any baggage or expectations.

While Key seems worthwhile as an exploration of how songs can grow and change over time, just like people, it's unlikely any of the songs are transformed enough to warrant a fan exodus from the originals. On top of that, the selections' mix of popular and lesser-known make it a lackluster hits collection. What may win over some listeners, however, is its knowing, somewhat ominous tone and its function as a songwriting showcase.

Although Key possesses some lovely moments - an intrigue-filled Fire, the gothic synth-pop of My Right A.R.M., a tender World Without End - many of these re-dos possess a curious lack of energy. [Dec 2024, p.108]
