Jonny Greenwood’s electric fuzz, supplementary rhythms, and beloved vintage Ondes Martenot synthesizer add real bulk to this Middle East meets East plus West experiment in cultural diplomacy.

An exotic, often rapturous reading of Tzur's Sufi-meets-Hebrew song forms. [Jan 2016, p.91]

Utterly distinctive, this excellent, effortlessly surprising record is the perfect cleanser for even the most jaded musical palette. [Jan 2016, p.106]

Junun should go down as something far more than an intellectual curiosity or the patronage of another culture’s “exotic” sounds, it should also go down as a downright enjoyable piece of music that can’t help color the air as well as move the feet.

The real stars here are the Rajasthan Express’s six-piece brass section, who come into their own on the joyous Julus and Junun Brass. Elsewhere, the hypnotic Hu locks into an almighty groove, while the excellent title track is built atop a pleasingly complex rhythm.

With Junun, Shye Ben Tzur, Jonny Greenwood and the Rajasthan Express succeed in creating a textured and energetic collection of songs that transcend genre and the generalizations often used when describing non-Western music. This is music to be embraced and celebrated.

The ensemble’s playing and the leader's compositions make Junun an easy stretch--though, crucially, not a condescending one--for listeners otherwise unfamiliar with the great variety of methods often obscured by "world music" market-speak.

Junun should be approached with a willingness to embrace new ideas. Greenwood is clearly the big audience draw here, but even fans of his solo compositions may feel a little lost. But, someone with an eager ear will find beauty in this blend of cultures and styles.

The results can be stirring. [Jan 2015, p.74]
  10. The guitarist and his normally hands-on producer are facilitators, with Tzur as the star. That might upset Radiohead fans expecting a stop-gap, but shouldn’t detract from an what's a largely immersive record.

The first time I heard Hu I knew that I wanted this record, it is a track that I find to be hauntingly beautiful. The whole album is beautifully produced, full of character and energy and something you will find yourself returning to again and again. When you listen to this album you feel like you are in the room with the musicians as they recorded it, a part of some special little group of talented people being enveloped in gorgeous sounds.
