Gaga really showed her talent as a lyricist in this record, more than in any other of her previous ones in my opinion. The songs also sound raw, in a sense where you can really hear her voice. This album is a different work from Lady Gaga, she is always doing a new stuff, showing she is more than performances and clothes. She shows her voice in a peculiar way, better than in cheek to cheek. We can feel all her feelings inside the songs.

I really wonder why she chose to take two of the (imo) weakest songs as first singles... Million reasons and perfect illusion do not match up to the majority of the songs. Apart from those two (and maybe the ultimately not-so-necessary-yet-still-nice-to-listen-to bonus tracks), all of the tracks are solid 8-10s.

Favs: Diamond Heart, Sinner's Prayer, Dancin' in Circles, Joanne

She's back again to change the whole game. And I'm not talking about Gaga, this is Stefani. Welcome Joanne. This is a crude and powerful, unique, out of the heart, pop-rock-country-indie album. There's no bad romance this time, don't expect that. It's even better. And it's not an illusion.

This my fav album of the year, so personal and genuine, I really love it, Beck, Bloodpop and Mark Ronson are genius and gaga too of course.
Her voice is so amazing, mature and powerful in this record, without auto-tune, showing all her talent.

This album is so unexpected but completely amazing. It distances itself from the usual and generic pop songs that are charting right now. It's a new and fresh sound that we've never head from her and I will play this album on repeat!

What a refreshing change! I've always wanted Gaga to do a more acoustic album, and this is really working for me. I grew up listening to a good deal of classic country and classic rock and this album sonically evokes a great many good memories for me of those times.

This is just amazing, you can see progression in every phase of the album. Some songs are awkwardly placed, like come to mama. But overall the album is amazing! bringing back the traditional pop and major turn away from the up beat EDM's

This is absolutely one of Lady Gaga's best albums, if not THE best one. The only track that is very inappropriate for the album is "Dancin' In Circles", a typical dance song that can remind to the first songs by Shakira. A really bad track. The only track that is very inappropriate for the album is "Dancin' In Circles", a typical dance song that can remind to the first songs by Shakira. A really bad track. By the way, in the other tracks, we can hear a lot of different influences from different genres. The crown jewel of this album is Sinner's Prayer, a country-ish song produced by Gaga herself, Mark Ronson, Bloodpop and Kevin Parker. Now, let's talk about the other song; "Diamond Heart" is a typical Gaga's pop song, nothing more. It is good, but there are better tracks. Not one of my favorites. "A-YO", the second promotional single, is a pop-rock that can remind to a new better version of the hit single "Shake It Off", released in 2014 by Taylor Swift. Not a good choice for a promotional single. The third song in the tracklist is the title track: "Joanne". A beautiful ballad dedicated to her aunt and one of the best songs of this album. Great lyrics and great instrumental. "John Wayne" is the fourth track of this album. It is, kinda, radio-friendly and I wouldn't be surprised if this song would become the second official single. Another crown jewel of this album. For the fifth song of this album, "Dancin' In Circles", I've already reported my opinion. After this, we have the first single, "Perfect Illusion". Maybe the illusion was the concept given by this first single in September? It wasn't a good choice to release that song as the first single, since it is very different from the other tracks of this album. A track out of place. "Million Reasons", another ballad, is one of Gaga's best produced songs from this album. I have a "Million Reasons" to love this track! Incredible.
About "Sinner's Prayer", I've already told my opinion. Outstanding. "Come To Mama" is a great song, not one of the best ones, but still good. In my opinion, this song would fit better as a bonus track on a deluxe version. "Hey Girl", a dance song with the incredible voice of Florence Welch, the singer of the band "Florence + The Machine". Incredible song. Loved it. Now let's talk about the last track of the standard edition: the amazing anthem "Angel Down". One of the best Gaga's songs. Well produced and an amazing work behind the lyrics. It may even make you shed, at least, one or two tears by the end of the track. About the deluxe edition, we have two other songs and an Angel Down work tape. "Grigio Girls" is a great song, there's nothing else to say. "Just Another Day" is THE track of this album! It may even seem a Beatles' song from the White Album. Loved it! So amazing.

9/10, just because of songs like Dancin' In Circles and Perfect Illusion.

Expand

But still, it has themes like; Come To Mom, Million Reasons, Joanne and Sinner's Pray that enchant the ears. Since everything has its disadvantages and it is that this did not taste the public, because Lady Gaga turned in everything that was, did and demonstrated, which she found to be someone who sold her image, this brought too many problems.

It's very apparent that Gaga wanted to make the music she genuinely felt like creating. The tracks are personal and authentic. Songs like 'John Wayne' and 'A-YO' and lead-single 'Perfect Illusion' make me want to act like a crazy person under the influence, while others like 'Million Reasons' (which is easily the best song on the album) and 'Angel Down' are very emotionally charged. Another highlight is 'Dancin' in Circles', which is as weird as it is catchy. On the other hand, there are songs that fall short, like 'Hey Girl' (I honestly expected more from the incredible collaboration is that Gaga and Florence) and 'Sinner's Prayer' which sounds monotonous and never quite explods.
All in all, the record is solid and it's quite a good addition to Lady Gaga's catalog.

At least that tends to be the sentiment that surrounds each new Gaga release. However, that somewhat implies that at some point (whether it was previously, or whether that be now) Gaga is “inauthentic”. It’s quite obvious that Gaga’s career is indebted to a pastiche of pop cultural vomit, drenched in copious amounts of artifice and layers of spectacle. ARTPOP was very much an illustration of this. Despite the undeserving critical lambast of Joanne’s predecessor I still stand by ARTPOP as Gaga at her most experimental, wild, well produced, textured, and fun.
In turn this seemingly turned down aesthetic seems to be centering the discussion. To say Joanne is stripped of any aesthetic curation and absent of the gaudy shtick that caked Gaga’s previous efforts is very misleading. Just as its misleading to label this album as “stripped down”.
The music on Joanne is often tightly layered, fleshy, and even texturally enhanced. Layers of guitars and fuzz dance between each other often on a lot of cuts, underscored often by warble-y synths, plucked bass, and hodgepodged analogue and synthetic beats. Joanne has been criticized for lack of hooks which I can understand. Here it’s not so much the lyrical content that reaches out, and the melodies are less lurching perhaps then on previous Gaga outings, but Joanne isn’t a deal in hooks so much as it is in groove.
The slink of country stomp “Sinner’s Prayer” and fuzz rock of “John Wayne” have a musical swagger (in the bass particular) that propels the music in a way Gaga hasn’t explored. The 70s piano rock of “Come to Mama”, and 80s electro funk of Florence Welch duet “Hey Girl” are eras from which Gaga has borrowed before, but here their stride is felt right into the bones of the rhythm. The undercurrent of Elton John and Prince are instantly felt upon the first listen of these tracks. This might be aided by vintage fetishist Mark Ronson’s executive co-production. Either way Joanne finds itself sonically resembling a lot of Gaga’s influences in way that they haven’t ever before, while still incorporating a palette of contemporary sounds to keep things somewhat current.
Gaga doesn’t feel uncomfortable adopting country on aforementioned highlight “Sinner’s Prayer” (who’s sinister guitar lead and stomping drum stroll are immeasurably pleasurable), and piano ballad “Million Reasons”. Fans turned off by these inclusions must’ve forgotten about the string of slight country/piano rock ballads hidden on each of her albums prior (i.e “Speechless”, “You + I”, “Gypsy” etc). Her hearty vibrato and thick lower register never feel out of place bellowing on these country tinged tracks just as they do affectedly breathy over electronic beats and synths.
Right from the get go Joanne delivers us the girl who grew up on Bruce Springsteen with the bright and leaping rock stomp “Diamond Heart”. “Ayo” combines Motown brass funk with the glitched vocal sampled beats and distorted groove also found on “John Wayne”, in which she pulls of danceable numbers with fuzzy guitars instead of glittery synthesizers.
The title tack, a beautifully guitar plucked, pseudo folk song, sees Gaga delve into the hurt of her family’s loss of the title’s namesake. Somewhat uplifted with underlying sadness Gaga finds a way to be emotionally resonant in a way she never achieved before.
The only songs that I really feel leave something to be desired are the Beck assisted, reggae tinged “Dancing in Circles”, and the 80s glam rock of lead single “Perfect Illusion” (a curious pick indeed). The former has been aptly dubbed No Doubt b-roll, with a chorus that would feel at home in the hands of Lana Del Rey. As for “Perfect Illusion”, the somewhat underwritten lyrics (particularly towards the end) divulge in cringe. And despite contribution from Kevin Parker of Tame Impala the song always fizzles at the thought of what it could be.
The deluxe edition tracks fare better, with the country campfire callout of “Girgio Girls” and the bopping 70s tread of “Just Another Day” following in the footsteps of previous tracks.
Angel down ends the album on a fine note. Somber and theatrical, Gaga croons over atmospheric strings and synth harps with a subtlety political ally cry over Black Lives Matter and the death of Trayvon Martin.
Ever since her intense breakthrough, ubiquity, and constant pop cultural dominance, a new Gaga release always comes with its baggage. And as with ARTPOP, Joanne is what is is and isn’t what it isn’t. However, it finds Gaga in a space where she’s exploring a facet of her musical muses that have never rung so resonantly before as they do now.

Gaga deconstructs the taboos was created to the public by herself, the breaking expectations and is presented as it is: a human being. All of this is encompassed in the name 'Joanne', his middle name and the name of his late aunt. Whether a casual listener or a “Little Monster,” I would advise the listener to approach “Joanne” as Stefani Germanotta’s first album, rather than Lady Gaga’s fifth. Only once the preconceived notions surrounding the construct of “Gaga” have been eradicated, can a glimpse of the artist herself truly be seen. And the artistry displayed here is truly remarkable. From beginning to end, the listener will embark on a cohesive, musical journey which is bound together by an authenticity that seems nearly impossible for a pop artist to achieve in this day and age. For Gaga’s longtime fans who might encounter difficulty embracing her newest shift in musical direction, the nearly perfect pop track “Dancin’ In Circles” is highly recommended. Additional highlights of the album include fantastically spunky “John Wayne,” heartbreaking ballad "Million Reasons," and the devastating social commentary “Angel Down.” The highly polarizing "Perfect Illusion" is a raw, tortured track, while “Just Another Day” is a light-hearted, lyrically simplistic track with obvious Beatles' influences, which serves as an impeccable closure to the emotional rollercoaster that is "Joanne." Here is a review of the 5 songs I enjoyed the most on the album:

    5. Dancin in Circles

For you fans nostalgic for 2009, Dancin in Circles was made for you. Little sister of LoveGame for its sexual tone and of Alejandro for its latino atmosphere, Dancin in Circles is an infernal track that will keep you awake until the early hours on the dancefloor... or in bed touching yourself. Even though Dancin in Circles seems to be related to Gaga's former big hits, Stefani's musical and artistic evolution is undeniably noticeable. Either for its hybrid genre of pop, house and country, or for the raw, fierce vocals she is serving, we recognize Stefani's artistic growth. The message is clear: she is back in a better place than never before!

    4. Come To Mama

This song is one of the most surprising tracks on Joanne. Come to Mama is a song with jazz and country sonorities that unexpectedly fills your soul with satisfaction and joy. The lyrics are simple and repetitive but relatable, the instrumental track is authentic, reminding us of a time of innocence and simplicity we may not even have been witness of. Come To Mama is a song that showcases Gaga's ability for making great still humble songs. We can see the undeniable impact her Grammy-winning jazz album Cheek to Cheek has had upon her art.

    3. John Wayne

John Wayne is a furious, transcendent rock song with a crazy, psychotic EDM-like chorus. With John Wayne, Gaga introduces us to the wildest part of her new alter ego Joanne. The song tells Gaga's love story with a bad boy called John Wayne. You may wonder why John Wayne sounds surprisingly similar to the album title track Joanne, at least I do!

    2. Million Reasons

This song may be the most emotional ballad Stefani has ever released next to Dope or Til It Happens To You. With Million Reasons, Lady Gaga is no longer afraid to show us her most vulnerable self. It is hard to keep oneself from crying when her raw, cracking voice screams and begs for "another reason to stay." The line "But Baby I'm bleeding, bleeding" may be one of the most heartbreaking in Gaga's whole ballads catalogue. Hillary Lindsey's backing vocals are the cherry on top of the cake. In a nutshell, Million Reasons may be Gaga's most moving, earnest and relatable songs she has ever released on an album.

    1. Angel Down

Angel Down is the title of the wonderful, heavenly, poignant yet tragic song that ends the musical experience of the album. Originally produced by RedOne and finished by Mark Ronson, Angel Down showcases what three music geniuses are capable of when talents are reunited. With Angel Down, Gaga brings us up high in Heaven to tell us a woeful story about humanity. The minimalistic instrumental track and Stefani's melancholic, pure vocals lead us somewhere in outer space to make us think about our human experience. The Work-Tape Deluxe version of the song is the actual demo on which Gaga frees her more chaotic self to express her most inner pains.

Other worthwhile songs: Diamond Heart, Joanne and Griogio Girls.

Joanne is the polar opposite of ARTPOP in every way; it's more accessible, more cohesive, more vulnerable. The experimentation isn't as obvious and in-your-face, and it comes through with more genuine moments and thought-provoking themes than its predecessor. Many fans will be turned off by this new direction, but when it comes right down to it, it's still Gaga doing what she loves.

This album has proved to those non believers who didn’t know that Gaga is constantly shifting as an artist. The one thing you can always count on with Lady Gaga, as we’ve always done, is thinking out of the box. She’s never typical with the type of music that she releases with every album. Every album sounds different, has a different message, a different look, which is why Gaga will always be the most truthful, most artistic and most honest musician today.

A lot of people, well, a lot of those on Twitter (other fanbases) will say that because she isn’t constantly hitting the #1 spot, or she isn;t outselling the last record that “no one’s interested in her anymore” and in all honesty, it’s the biggest load of **** ever. People still talk about Lady Gaga, people still love to listen to her music. Just because she isn’t releasing generic dance recycled trash once every month doesn’t mean she’s not relevant. In fact, if anything it makes her one of the most relevant artists is the industry and that’s why she will always be remembered. Not just for the costumes, not just for the music, not just for what she stands for, but for her legacy. How she never changed for anyone. She hasn’t been let into this industry where artists don’t have a lot of say in what they’re performing or releasing. She does what she believes in, and that’s why she works with the icons. That’s why she is, an icon. This album proves it.

In terms of the album, the album is just fantastic. Of course it is. It’s a complete game changer, not only her her and the fans, but also for other artists. The country influence has really worked with this album, and again, Lady Gaga has managed to release an A+ album with some remarkable songs. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how it’d done.

I'm not interested in debating the authenticity of the album, but as someone who has always liked Gaga's voice though never much of her music, I think this is a really solid album. It definitely has a strong country/Americana influence, and she has the rawness in her voice to sell that. It isn't perfect, but it's a huge step in the right direction after the messy ARTPOP. Expand

Mis favoritas son John Wayne y Come to mama, Sinner's prayer y Hey girl con Florence Welch.

Although Gaga showcased some good vocals on the album; Dancing in Circle, Ayo and John Wayne are the only good songs on the album. The rest is just too boring especially for Gaga fans who are used to more explicit and dance songs. Joanne is a good effort but not a 3 year wait for this. It is also like Madonna meets Adele for this album (which isnt a good combination). However the album is quite average, it is not a very strong contender at the Grammys, but the only nod it can get is for Best Pop Vocal album although its hardly pop Expand

A nice come-back and a good artistic evolution. LG needed a change from her over-the-top career as it has been so far. I approve and applaude her decision.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This is what she's all about.
I wish people would realise that this album is just as real and authentic as her past albums. If you want to complain that she's changing, well she is. That's what she is all about.

This album is just horrible. Gaga sells an image "pure" without "pretense" but ends up being her worst attempt as a musician. The concept is just unbearable and the music nowhere near to amazing.

A letra, algumas vezes, soa contraditória.

A minha segunda favorita do álbum, "Dancin' In Circles". É uma "So Hapy I Could Die" mais animada, menos inocente, mais adulta, menos 'autotunada'.

Mas a Gaga já fez isso antes em "The Fame/The Fame Monster", "Born This Way" e "ARTPOP".

Assim como "Sinne'rs Prayer", "Come To Mama" não me agradou, talvez, a letra.

    Bem vindo, "Joanne"!

Joanne never reveals much of a narrative or stylistic through-line, and even her brief dips into indie-rock--her collaborations with Father John Misty on “Sinner’s Prayer” and “Come to Mama” (Misty is also credited as a writer on Beyonce’s Lemonade), and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker on “Perfect Illusion” (Rihanna covered Parker’s “New Person, Same Old Mistakes” on Anti)--feel familiar.Joanne never reveals much of a narrative or stylistic through-line, and even her brief dips into indie-rock--her collaborations with Father John Misty on “Sinner’s Prayer” and “Come to Mama” (Misty is also credited as a writer on Beyonce’s Lemonade), and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker on “Perfect Illusion” (Rihanna covered Parker’s “New Person, Same Old Mistakes” on Anti)--feel familiar.

Unfortunately, therein lies the biggest problem with Joanne: for every time that Gaga seemingly breaks free of her shackles and embraces something more “real,” she quickly scuttles back into her comfort zone and hides behind glistening production. This probably isn’t quite the sound of the real Stefani Germanotta, but if you squint hard enough there’s a semblance of a real person in amongst the pop haze.

Joanne is certainly not the all-conquering opus it was intended to be and will prove divisive, but it remains a daring and exciting record, delivered from one of modern pop’s most unique and singular voices.
