There isn't much on is that My Morning Jacket couldn't have done on their own, but having a neutral observer on board certainly appears to have helped them up their game as a recording act, and it's one of the most purely satisfying albums they've delivered since they changed their game with Z.

Is doesn’t have the same eclectic range as something like Z or The Waterfall, but it’s a solid album with ten captivating songs and no missteps. From the danceable groove rock of “Everyday Magic” to the propulsive banger “Lemme Know,” everything works.

The result successfully veers from radio-friendly gems Everyday Magic and Time Waited (built around a tumbling piano sample from pedal steel player Buddy Emmons’ 1969 LP Emmons Guitar Inc) to Free-styled riffer Squid Ink and bluesy closer River Road. [Apr 2025, p.78]

Long-time Jacket-watchers might miss the wig-outs of their previous album, but the band’s range and power haven’t been compromised so much as integrated and harnessed. .... My Morning Jacket’s ongoing momentum feels earned and assured. [Mar 2025, p.102]

Piano ballad “Time Waited” likewise nods at AM radio, but stays hooky and distinctive enough to work. They might often sound their best in spacey atmospherics and wandering tunes, but finding tight structures and focused delivery serves them well, too.

If some of this stuff might feel a little bit polished and hemmed-in for longtime Jacket fans, they can be reassured by thinking of how easily these tunes could become launch pads for capacious jams on the road. But the economy and texture here is refreshing. Restraint helps bring out the soul in the album’s softer songs, too.

is is (yikes) a low-stakes and contented release, quite enjoyable for what it is and wholly inessential.

It’s as if O’Brien set out to make the paragon of a modern My Morning Jacket album and succeeded in both style and sound, only forgetting to leave room for the surprises that actually gave their early works ineffable power. It’s boring.
