It's a realization in retrospect that occurs too often throughout In Heaven. And in those moments one can't help but be disappointed, hearing Twin Sister such a cut below what they were doing just one short year ago.

Despite her talents, ultimately In Heaven feels like a bit of a disappointment, but a great album is still well within their abilities in the future if they ditch some of the kookiness and concentrate on their considerable strengths.

Estella and guitarist/singer Eric Cardona trade quirky elocution and harmonies with twinkling, twangy arrangements that toe the fine line between charming and cutesy.

For all its languid rookie charms, In Heaven might be best remembered as the harbinger of a more consistent sequel.

Coming off their auspicious 2010 EP Color Your Life, Long Island's Twin Sister have delivered a maddeningly ambitious, haphazard, and unfortunately inconsistent debut LP. [Oct. 2011, p. 106]

Most of In Heaven, however, lacks tension, build, or direction.

The hooks on this are unbelievably good. The first listen may strike many listeners as slow, but once you get into it, this is it. Best albumThe hooks on this are unbelievably good. The first listen may strike many listeners as slow, but once you get into it, this is it. Best album released in 2011, by FAR. If you have a bit of patience, this will hit you with a lasting permanence most indie records can't provide these days. I'm surprised to not see this on more end-year lists. Hurrr 2deep4u SPIN? I hated the singer's voice on "All around and away we go," I HATEHATEHATE disco revivalism, I hate how ever critic will simply label a new band "dream pop" if they have a female singer and clean guitars and call it a day, and honestly I hated the album cover a little bit. A.) This album, and Twin Sister themselves, are not dream pop. B.) "In Heaven" does sound like just another less-than-creative band going through the motions. But C.) This album is damn enjoyable. The production quality utilizes great space separation and just enough crisp compression. Andrea Estella's voice is just right throughout, with a smoky texture and off-and-on stark & discreet melodies. A refreshing lack of reverb easily puts this band ahead of their contemporaries. All of the band members are locked in, and when the hooks aren't catchy they still maintain a decent groove.
I wouldn't guarantee that anyone could love this album, as I'm still not sure I do, but it's definitely worth 2 listens.

While In Heaven isOn their last release, Color Your Life EP, Twin Sister managed to deliver a diverse and interesting set of songs. While In Heaven is definitely more coherent (indie and dream pop dominate the album), it has little energy. There is no standout track such as All Around and Away We Go and most of the material feels tedious. Kimmi in a Rice Field saves the record â Full Review »
