This album represents the fundamental problem with the music industry being so affected by TikTok. TikTok has created this genre of music, and honestly, it's a plauge. The vocal performance in this album is, for lack of a better word, annoying. The songs are so emotionally charged, which I generally like, but it feels very inauthentic with the 900 cowriters per song. The songs are so emotionally charged, which I generally like, but it feels very inauthentic with the 900 cowriters per song. There are not many albums that give me anxiety, but this one did, which is not a good thing. The only songs I would ever consider relistening to are "chaotic," and "boy x," but even then, I still think these are relatively weak strong moments. I wanted to like this album, but until these 20-year-old songwriters realize that this type of music is very annoying, there will be many disappointed reviews like this. Expand

That McRae also manages to bring a hooky sense of pop joy to the album speaks to her growing maturity as an artist.

    Astute and piercing.

Apart from some missteps—like the excruciating Finneas-produced “i still say goodnight”—i used to think i could fly soars with confidence, a record that remains absolutely sure of itself even as McRae’s emotions vacillate between bravado and self-immolation.
