Scattered takes of pop, gruff-punk and sun-kissed melodies underpin these tales of despondency to cement a whole new style for a band near two decades in, a sound that Joyce Manor have yet to have presented but one that fits them perfectly, and a masterful progression of all that has come before.

It doesn’t hurt that the music hums along with the hooky economy of Guided by Voices and a punk poet’s sensibility. Hearing them continue to grow and evolve keeps me coming back for more than just a nostalgia trip.

Not a single track gets time to overstay its welcome. As always, they get in, deliver some great songs, and then get out. If the scope seems smaller, it is only because they’re so adept at what they do.

An album for repeated plays, this is an exhilarating, bittersweet addition to the Joyce Manor canon that easily stands alongside their best work.

Joyce Manor continues playing to their strengths with I Used To Go To This Bar, going big with microdosed strong songs that blast on by.

I Know Where Mark Chen Lives and The Opossum, both of which race by in a blur of sawtooth guitars, spring-loaded basslines and earnest vocals. Yet there is dynamic range here, too. [Jan 2026, p.101]

Written and performed by a band well into their groove, and produced by Bad Religion legend-cum-Epitaph owner Brett Gurewitz, the finished product is finely balanced, tastefully under-polished and perfectly baked.

Songcraft is still their priority, and their moments of indulgence are not without self-awareness or criticism.

Their seventh album is clever, arch and compelling. [Mar 2026, p.79]

Joyce Manor’s latest is a very likeable and highly-charged return from a proper contemporary cult band, one that boasts an admirable ability to tap into a resonant well of impassioned feelings, in spite of one or two slightly misjudged digressions.

On their seventh LP, Joyce Manor find a fine middle ground, and the result is their best record since 2012’s Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired.

Demonstrates a continued forte for hooky songs that are just as likely to draw from '80s inspirations like The Smiths and Aztec Camera as from Joyce Manor's rowdier predecessors on Epitaph. [Feb 2026, p.35]

I Used To Go To This Bar splits the difference between the grown-up Joyce Manor and the sharp punk they’re known for, with an extra dose of existential panic.
