With Highway Hypnosis, the cool kid sets the trend yet again--now floating almost entirely away from the bass, Moolchan cranks down the tempo for a decisively more urban flair that draws from the streets of Lisbon, Atlanta, and London in equal measure. And somehow, even with all this new swag, our sneaky protagonist loses none of the prankster wit that turned heads in the first place.

It's not that Sneaks' music doesn't take itself seriously, but each song is so well-crafted that it lacks the self-consciousness that could weigh a project like Highway Hypnosis down.

Perhaps the only disappointing thing about Highway Hypnosis is its brevity, with not one song reaching over the three minute mark. You could see this as a failure to let the songs truly fly, but, regardless, it ensures the LP's selection of knock-out tracks gets stuck on repeat--a selection that's arguably her finest to date.

Tracks such as The Way It Goes or Suck It Like A Whistle are dynamic, dramatic rap-funk, which find the ambition to measure up to her obvious talent. [Mar 2019, p.118]

While 2017's It's a Myth clocked several miles from her strictly ESG-like bass workouts, Highway Hypnosis cruises into a diamond-studded warp zone.

Each soundbite from Highway Hypnosis is heavy and layered, every track an earworm.

Some artists stumble when they move on from a strongly minimal aesthetic, but Sneaks sounds justifiably confident on Highway Hypnosis, and this suggests any number of new directions where her talent could travel.

None of these 13 tracks break the three-minute mark, but each works an enormous amount of inventiveness into its brief running time.

This album has everything and it works. [Feb 2019, p.89]

When things work, Moolchan sounds confident taking on new influences and playing around with them until they fit within her playful vision. Mostly, though, Highway Hypnosis is frustrating in that it feels more like a collection of potentially good but unfinished ideas that lack the focus and imagination needed to make them work.

This is voluminous in length and style. [Feb 2019, p.33]

While brevity has consistently been a feature of Moolchan’s work, here the relatively short song lengths mean that some tracks can feel somewhat intangible, ending before they seem to be getting into their stride.

At just less than 30 minutes, Highway Hypnosis is in fact her longest record, and it feels longer still.

Sneaks is 2019's true pop original, channeling artists such as M.I.A. and St. Vincent to create 13 deeply mysterious, dark, yet danceable tracks.
