A relaxed and hooky sophomore album with 2025's Hickey.

There is no mistaking that ‘Hickey’ is Royel Otis at their most self-assured. .... We can’t help but question if slightly more hunger to push the boundaries would add a greater sense of depth to an otherwise satisfying album.

Fans of songs like “Heading for the Door” and, yes, their cover of The Cranberries “Linger” will be delighted to hear that Royel Otis have embraced grey areas, made their sound more dynamic, and aimed directly for the heart (or, more accurately, the neck).

Maybe it’s the boyish charm of their nature, or maybe it’s just the excitement of unpredictability, but the sonic ping-ponging on hickey only makes Royel Otis’ incongruent sound more appealing. It’s familiar enough to hook you in, but just offbeat enough to feel fresh and compelling.

In the end, LP 2 is the sound of a band taking everything that’s worked so far and refining it with style, taste and precision.

Despite tracks expressing feelings of complicated relationship, the Royel Otis signature feel-good indie sound remains beautifully uncomplicated.

You can really relish these songs as outpourings of vulnerability, confusion and anger. They could be perfect to help lovely folk to dance away the pain of messy breakups. But you don’t have to strain too hard to hear them on the incel’s playlist either. Hickey’s a tricky one.
