It succeeds, despite the potential baggage it carries, Mariah Carey’s new album proves that she possesses timeless gifts.

Here for It All doesn’t exactly shake things up, but it’s a pretty, polished affair all the same, Carey sitting comfortably on top of her sonic throne and uninterested in relinquishing it any time soon.

The record isn’t as cohesive or experimental as ‘Caution’, it’s not a big musical transition moment like ‘Butterfly’ was, and it’s not as viral-worthy as ‘Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel’ – but it’s still pretty darn good.

The time between albums (seven years, in this case) gives Here for It All a certain weight that its songs don’t quite bear. In the scheme of her smash-packed discography, this is a minor work. But if only all minor works were so consistently enjoyable. The air of meh palpable during many of Carey’s recent public appearances is mostly replaced with gusto and wit (though the way lead single “Type Dangerous” flatlines in the hook is just meh again).

Considering the extended album drought, Here for It All is surprisingly concise like Caution, though the number of directions it takes is reminiscent of the singer's hourlong statements.

11 tracks that mostly play it safe and stay in her pocket, though there’s no denying her voice is still intact.

The songs on Here for It All aren’t as fresh or tightly consistent as the ones on 2018’s Caution. Instead of an album’s worth of old-school R&B like “In Your Feelings” or disco-funk like “I Won’t Allow It,” Here for It All tries to, well, do it all and ends up falling short.
