It could slot into the soundtrack of anyone’s life, it has that sort of everyman, indie movie quality. But it’s for him first, and it’s an incredibly pure distillation of who Finn is when he’s not on camera.

The only thing holding Happy Birthday back from being classic is its brevity and maybe lack of ambition; other than that, the quality of the songs, the impact of the vocals, the excellent production, and his ability to reference the past without aping it combine to make it a superb start for a promising solo career.

Happy Birthday is a sentimental album, and a remarkable demonstration of Finn Wolfhard’s laid-back, instinctive approach to songwriting.

It all has a vintage feel to it, too, with hints of Faces’ guitar strumming styles, but that’s combined with a more modern approach; here, Wolfhard could be a cousin of Alex G or MJ Lenderman, but with the energy of UK band C Turtle.

An album that, in the best sense of the term, is all over the place. [Jul 2025, p.84]
