Soothing but subversive, Green Lanes is never quite as easy as it seems. You could hear it as the perfect summer record, but if you listen to it carefully, it’s a bit more than that.

They have created another cohesive body of work that’s unhurried, considered and produces all the classic components of a timeless record that embodies the very moment.

Ultimate Painting may sound like a lot of bands--Real Estate, The Feelies--but they set their own beguiling pace, sounding completely untroubled by the passing of time. [Sep 2015, p.83]

Listening to the beautiful, restful and balanced sounds of Green Lanes, one hopes that they do indeed continue to work together for years and years.

Cooper and Hoare's deceptively simple interplay slowly worms into your synapses, as their seemingly anonymous melodies gain personality.

Green Lanes, the second album from Ultimate Painting, is really, really nice. It doesn’t do anything special, or new, or especially original.

Through repetition and ringing hooks, Ultimate Painting follow a steady course by achieving a clarity in production that is free of clutter.

While Green Lanes doesn’t exactly break new ground, it does refine their warm’n’cosy formula enough to interest.

It’s a pastel water coloured effort that’s like The Byrds with less shimmering jangle, The Beatles with less melodious catchiness, The Velvet Underground with less fuzz and Lou Reed drawl: but it works.

Hoare and Cooper complement one another by scaling back, turning in slower numbers that minimize the otherwise boastful harmonies of their last album.

Green Lanes is rooted in it's own moment, passing without much incident, shining brief, but bright, and remaining charming.

Woken By Noises [is] reminiscent of the third Velvet Underground record. Elsewhere, however, the songs come across as elegant but a little flat, with a noticeable dip around the middle of the album. [Oct 2015, p.116]

A deliciously woozy guitar rush, buzzing in the style of the Velvets or the Clean, yet infused by the spirit of the Grateful Dead.

Once you’ve finished playing Name That Influence, it becomes just a nice mid-tempo indie pop record with catchy guitar hooks.

There’s little evidence the duo had a mission to make the album of a lifetime. It’s more of a heavenly-sounding hobby.

Although Green Lanes is a total bore, it is cool how they bear this mask on a handful of different songs. They've made that style of storytelling their own.

Cooper and Hoare not only borrow, but fully adopt characteristics of traditionalist rock, like inoffensive lyrics, bland instrumentation, and unfettered nostalgia, all of which makes Green Lanes barely discernible from hundreds of other albums.
