Feb 20, 2026Collaborations with vocalists Serpentwithfeet, Elise Serenelle and India Carney bring elevated moments to an album of ambient piano which will have you drifting in thought.

Feb 20, 2026Just occasionally the music gets over-produced, with the beefed-up strings on Retreat smothering the Bach-like arpeggios of its piano, but mostly we breathe the outdoor air in a meditative state. For this is Moby at his most effective, with no need to play to his audience, simply offering private musical ambience to soothe and console.

Feb 20, 2026Moby's weary voice surfaces during the mournful "This Was Never Meant for Us," one of several songs that start out slow and sparse but eventually bloom when the strings hit. "Mott Street 1992" recalls the best of Moby's downtempo material, with dreamy breakbeats and lush synths conveying a slow-moving but expressive rush of feeling.

Apr 14, 2026Overall, the album achieves its goal, unfolding a soulful listen with just about enough songs with vocals to keep you attentive throughout as well. It is also a nice change of pace for those who follow Moby’s more recent releases, but worth checking for anyone who is into ambient music too.

Record CollectorFeb 20, 2026It's the polar opposite of Moby's early hardcore punk and dancefloor output, so go elsewhere if that's your preference. [Mar 2026, p.104]
