Aan album that proves he’s more than capable on his own.

This second studio effort from FINNEAS is less experimental than the 2021 debut ‘Optimist’, but has more of a direction, even if said direction becomes a little formulaic toward the latter half of the record.

Its lyrics are concerned mainly with current- or post-relationship malaise, whether he regrets ever getting together in the first place (the somewhat cringy "Starfucker"), feels distant ("2001," "Same Old Story"), wonders if he's leaving any impression at all ("What's It Gonna Take to Break Your Heart?"), or ambivalently philosophizes "Maybe love is a way to kill time," which could have been the title for the album.

Some the album echoes the shadowy, finely burnished alt-pop of Billie’s excellent 2024 album Hit Me Hard and Soft, albeit with a less engrossing presence at its center.

Too often on For Cryin’ Out Loud, he plays it far too safe and sounds up sounding like any other pop singer – and, as there’s a lot of competition out there, a bit more daring may be required should Finneas come out of the production/songwriting shadows next time.
