However, for the true fans that understand her music it is this; Folklore sounds and feels like a mature version of the lyrical masterpiece, Red. The album as a whole feels sonically cohesive, offering listeners various instrumentals and sounds to absorb in its construction and arc from start to finish. The album as a whole feels sonically cohesive, offering listeners various instrumentals and sounds to absorb in its construction and arc from start to finish. Despite this however, it is not the production of the album alone which defines it. Instead Taylor has produced an album which highlights and concentrates on her renowned lyricism and story-telling abilities. Folklore offers various character narratives, stories, and perspectives, whereby Taylor finesses her audience with her poetic skills and ability to “paint a picture” of the scene which she is describing in her songs. Her characters each have their own arc and realisations, with her lyrics and stories offering a deeper message than what is presented at face value. Taylor, unlike many artists today, does not rely on big, bold, bass heavy sounds to create her album, offering instead a minimalistic, magical experience which centralises on her narratives and lyrics. Folklore is, in my opinion, an unequivocally lyrical masterpiece. The album is mature and insightful, leaving unquestioned the fact that Taylor Swift is one of greatest lyricists in the music industry.… Expand

The album truly utilize the best traits of Taylor Swift as an artist, and what made her previous albums & some songs so amazing and critically acclaimed. One thing is her songwriting, which goes back to more of her country roots, but much more effective and mature, and also the production and subtlety of all the songs throughout the album, which I argue most of her acclaimed songs were from previous albums having the same traits, those type of songs were really where she shines through, were she’s in her element. All I can say is I am shock how one of the biggest country artist and more recently the biggest pop act of her time could release an alternative/folk/indie album and kills it like shes been making these ty of albums/songs from the start of her career. This album goes against what pop music is now, yet is so strong it just might be able to survive on current radio.

    Swift's best work by far. Alternative may be a new genre to Taylor Swift's catalogue but it sure didn't show. Her songwriting was shown in the best artistic way in this album, showing comfort. Unlike her songwriting in the pop genre, which sometimes seemed held back and simplified to fit the pop style, she embraced artistic and poetic natural songwriting here.

    These 16 tracks (17 on the deluxe version) play out quite pleasurably in their entirety, the joins between Swift, Dessner and Antonoff ultimately only of niche interest. But Swift’s powerful songs reach their climaxes with bittersweet orchestrations, rather than blows to the solar plexus or a ringing in the ears. Everything hovers; little truly lands.
