Among the catalogs of Ms. Taylor Swift throughout her music career, I can definitely say that "folklore" is a unique, different, honest, vulnerable and incomparable album so far. With the hint of the album cover and the texture of the color, I knew in my head it is going to be something unexpected, something in its sound we never heard before from her. I theorized that the album would touch the sound of the indie genre and due to the fact that I [a recent indie-genre addict this quarantine] feel it, just with the album cover and also the tracklist. With the album "folklore", I feel the emotions on every tracks, on how it almost connect to everyone's feeling especially for someone whose been stuck in homes for 4 months [and counting] already and the longing, sadness, and the search for the day that everything will be normal and fine again. I love the fact that Taylor manage and embrace the new sound of hers because it is truly what we needed. We need compassion, support, care, and love in these times of chaos, cruelty, and hardships and she used music to feel those things into everyone of us, with every single tracks. Half of the tracks are made of characterizations and third person perspectives and the rest of the tracks tackles about her life's history and revealing her vulnerable side on her dwellings with her current relationship. The productions are exquisite and well produced and the lyrics are truly calming and comfortable and the cursing never bothers me because it adds flavor to the meaning of the song and emotion. In conclusion, Ms. Taylor Swift literally surprise me, with the new sound I never heard for years and creating an album what exactly the would sound right now and an album that can live on movies and for so many years to come. Taylor Swift has always been an avid songwriter and a lyrical genius. How she depicted her emotion through her writings was one of key factors on why I was intrigued by her in the first place. I was 10 back then when I heard of her.

Her most recent album; folklore, consists of 16 beautifully composed songs. In the same way as how she announced this album, she surprisingly has taken a turn from pop to Indie-folk/Alternative genre. She aced either one, as well as the preceding one; country.

Taken in a forest setting with a black and white filter, this album brought so many light and 16 different shades I never thought I had come across, along with emotions I don’t think I’ve ever felt before.

Her voice in all of the 16 songs is relatively peaceful. The second you hear one of the songs, you’d feel like as if you’re being transported to a place of tranquility you’ve never been to before.

Folklore is so beautiful and well done. Folklore is Taylor’s new album. Some songs are heartbreaking, but the songwriting is a whole new level. Each song has a story to be told. Each song, I feel transported into a storybook and watching the lyrics come to life.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. All I can say is, that this album is worth listening to. There was no skips, every song from this album are beautiful.

The whole album shows the maturity of Taylor Swift as a songwriter. People gave her a backlash before and saying her way of writing was too childish, emotional and very expressive. But she proved in folklore that she evolved and grow in her songwriting process.
I must say, this album is better than Lover, Red, reputation and Speak Now (her past albums that has a cohesive songwriting too) It is her best work so far.
The whole album has a complex lyrics, creatively written and she still sticks to her writing style, which she uses metaphors and imagery on each songs. She brings magic and sparks to the tracks on folklore. The fact that every swiftie/non-swiftie that listens to the album has a song to claim or a song to relate to.
Folklore album proved that Taylor is a very flexible songwriter and a singer that can do different genres. She made country, country-pop, pop-rock, synth-pop, mainstream pop and now, she is stepping into alternative and indie music.
The lyrics, the production, the vocals, aesthetics and the video of cardigan gave everyone the feels during this quarantine and pandemic.
This album deserves to sweep every awards, especially the toughest and highest categories in any award ceremonies.
To conclude, She made a lot of changes in her music after this album was released. And, once again, she made a revolutionary album in a new genre.

Honestly, Taylor has outdone herself in this album. Especially with the lyrics for the 16 songs featured in this release. And I’m not mad at the music either, it took a few tries on some songs and some songs kinda bleed together and sound similar but other than that I liked the style she was going for. Like teetering on the edge of insanity of the mind blowing kind. It makes you aware of every single movement or slight. The thumping of your heart in your ears will not cease, will refuse to cease, because the moment is cathartic. Some emotions are too strong to successfully convey with ease. Words fall short because you're drowning in the depths of that feeling that's lifting your feet off the ground and slowly pushing you over the edge while your ears ring.

It lasts for a minute, maybe two, and you’ll scramble to feel it, over and over again, but how ironic that you wish to feel that fleeting ecstasy constantly when the reason it is euphoric is its momentary existence.

I had to put this out because music rarely defies every single odd for me but folklore made me feel. Constantly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Folklore has been lauded for its lyricism and while it is true that we are taken through a rich web of carefully placed metaphors and vocabulary, it being stripped back and positioned as a folk/alternative/indie(?) album means that Swift's on-the-nose writing tendencies are brought more starkly to the listeners attention. Taking 'mirrorball' as an example, as one redditor put it:

    "
    'I want you to know
    I'm a mirrorball
I'll show you every version of yourself tonight
I'll get you out on the floor
    Shimmering beautiful
And when I break, it's in a million pieces'

It's like ... yup! you explained how a mirrorball works very comprehensively, figuratively and quite literally. thank you! a little more tell than show, like an english class essay."

One can't help but contrast Folklore to other albums in the space, for example Phoebe Bridger's Punisher, released only a month prior, which paints pictures using a collage of astute observations and stand alone metaphors that the listener must ruminate on before any meaning becomes clear. That's not to say that Swift's lyrics are not pleasing, they just feel more like musical theatre, where it is important that plot points are not missed, than an indie album. The lyrics of 'betty' and 'the last great american dynasty' feel the most naturally suited to the style of their music; both are outwardly telling a story with the former sounding like it wouldn't be out of place on a country album including Swift's own Fearless. Incidentally, these are two of my favourites on the album. I find this little run in tlgad particularly delightful:

'The wedding was charming, if a little gauche
There's only so far new money goes
They picked out a home and called it "Holiday House"
Their parties were tasteful, if a little loud
The doctor had told him to settle down
It must have been her fault his heart gave out
    '

My personal, replay-17-times-in-a-row favourites, though, are the ones that, though probably based on fictitious scenarios, feel the most gut-wrenchingly honest and vulnerable: 'this is me trying' and 'hoax'. "Gut-wrenchingly honest and vulnerable" is, really, the quality that has always separated Taylor from her peers. Even in her endeavours to produce the perfect pop song and the feeling, particularly in her latest albums, that she /really wants us to know certain things/ (e.g. heavy handed references to alcohol - we get it Taylor, you're not a squeaky clean country girl anymore), there is no pop star we believe is showing us their real life more than Taylor Swift. Folklore has proven that it goes even further: there is no pop star we want to hear stories from more than Taylor Swift.

This is her most mature album sonically and lyrically yet. The way she blends her voice into every song paints a cinematic scene. I felt like I was actually in the album. A great thing is Taylor Swift take a role as the narrator by creating a collection of stories. She is then able to reconnect these songs for a melodramatic ending. The previous albums always ended end in a positive note. This is her most mature album sonically and lyrically yet. The way she blends her voice into every song paints a cinematic scene. Her voice is most suitable for this kind of genre because it’s not “powerful” or “hard” like Beyoncé, Ariana Grande or Katy Perry. Nothing wrong with them. Taylor Swift’s soft voice fits perfectly into this album to express her vulnerability. We’ll have to wait till can we hear her deluxe track. Simplicity is at its finest. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It peaks into great detail about love and humanity. Tracks like ‘mirrorball’, ‘the last great american dynasty’ and ‘seven’ all dive into an indie/pop. Tracks are very well produced, in high view and are all clear about the ways and intentions of what they mean. ‘august’ is a well example of that, this track speaks about a lover who is lost throughout the “school year” and loses touch with them. Taylor speaks about how this person wasn’t hers to lose or to cry over because they never accepted her. The album deserves a good 9-10 for how well-developed it is and especially the great production. Each track was built from perspective and truth which allows us to experience this with her. For an album built throughout the 4-5 month quarantine time, it is a beautiful record. Expand

    The songs are very well-composed❤

This isn't the first time Taylor wrote so many good songs in an album, however, this definitely is on another level compared to her pop and country music.

Best album ever!

Taylor knows how to write and it shows: the complexity and the references blow my mind and every time i listen to it i find more. The fact that Taylor is showing versatility navigating genres but still remaining true to herself (listen to the country/pop influences) just proves she has a galaxy brain. Deserves AOTY nomination!

Actually this album is the one of the her best album. It has really awesome songs and this album is a little bit emotional so I can’t listen this album everytime but when you sad or you feel some feelings like this, it helps very well. Folklore is life itself. However I couldn’t finish to listen all the songs on the album respectively, because it’s very slow and I’m bored. It's a sharp turn to the left for Swift and a fine reminder that she is more than just a gleaming pop phenomenon, but a remarkable songwriter too. [Oct 2020, p.36]

A modern-folk masterpiece which finds her moving from her previous pop bangers into stunningly simple yet sharp melodies, ‘folklore’ will be going down in Swiftie history as one of her most unexpected, and undoubtedly one of her best.

These 16 tracks (17 on the deluxe version) play out quite pleasurably in their entirety, the joins between Swift, Dessner and Antonoff ultimately only of niche interest. But Swift’s powerful songs reach their climaxes with bittersweet orchestrations, rather than blows to the solar plexus or a ringing in the ears. Everything hovers; little truly lands.
