The band sacrifices their love for challenging sonics for soaring harmonies that accent subtle nods to Western nostalgia while filling the room with grandiose arrangements, creating a tight and consistently entertaining tracklist that still finds ways to shock and amaze.

Whereas their last record, The Silver Chord, was synthetic, a point of weakness for the band, Flight b741 shifts to the organic, a point of strength that highlights how comfortable the band are playing with one another, from their effortless harmonies to their ability to jam without getting too noodle-y.

Although troubled themes lurk in the lyrics, boogie-driven closer Daily Blues encapsulates the album’s appeal neatly: for pure retro-rock escapism, this Flight is just the ticket.

Flight b741 could have come off as overly kitsch or ironic, but King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard stick the landing.

Perhaps not the album that will secure the band’s legacy, but one that reminds their cult following that the boys can play hard as well as work hard.

Flight b741 feels like the doozy Primal Scream aspired to circa Give Out But Don’t Give Up. Turns out you don’t have to fly to Memphis to shine. [Sep 2024, p.88]

Flight b741 is a striking combination of form and emotion from a band where the former has often been scrutinised by critics at the expense of the latter.

KGLW now take their foot off the gas via this countrified, ’70s rock’n’roll set with a warm, relaxed air. [Sep 2024, p. 37]

Sadly, Flight b741 is the first record they've made where it might make more sense to avoid the journey and stick to revisiting some of their glorious excursions of the past instead.
