A compulsive half-hour montage of dynamic Metric buzz-pop, Garage tech-rock, drivetime soundtrack sounds and pummelling grit metal. [Nov 2024, p.79]

‘I Confess, I Guess’ too is a little too mid-paced to leave anything to hold on to. But where the songs work with and without context, it’s a joy.

There are also a couple of tracks that threaten to fall into formulaic power-pop territory, such as Tired Old Dog and Lift Heavy. Yet there’s still a lot to enjoy on Film Buff, and it also acts as justification for Shea’s decision to carry on with the band when Vikingstad and Lokøy left.

Sløtface’s third album leaves the feeling of a musical outfit undergoing a bit of a rebirth, but one that’s brimming with promise. Don’t bet against Haley making this new incarnation of Sløtface even better as they continue to find their sound.

Some of the punkier elements of old are fighting with the grandeur aims of the future. At a time when a new generation of artists is doing inventive things to revitalise guitar music once more, two minutes of snot-nosed punk riffs don’t hold the same sway they once did.
