Lyrically introspective, musically tight and vocally resolute, Fade Away is Best Coast’s best work to date.

The grit has returned, but new shimmer introduced on that album has not, and the result is a much more rounded and energetic sound.

On this seven-song EP, Bethany Cosentino combines the sundown power-pop buzz of Best Coast's 2010 debut with the Hulk-hug melodies and emotional gravity of last year's The Only Place to make for something masterfully archetypal but utterly her own.

There's a load of fuzzy power chords ruling these tunes, but they're smoothed out and nudged into the background, allowing a very capable Cosentino to take her rightful place at the front of the mix. [No. 104, p.52]

While Cosentino is anxious to figure out who she’s become, Fade Away points to how strong she’s been all along.

Fade Away is by no means a backslide--these are some of Cosentino's best songs to date--but rather than pointing the way forward, this EP feels more like the end of an era.

Fade Away reminds us of how infectious Best Coast can be, and its short length ensures that we hold on. While Cosentino is still learning, listening to her music doesn’t get old.

The enjoyably fluffy, pacy tunes here match Best Coast’s debut, but the content makes you want to scream ‘Get a f***ing life and chill out!’ at the speakers.

Musically it's very much as you were, country-tinged alt-rock, a little punkier in places, a little less scared of making a racket.

It's too bad the EP is saddled with a couple duds, because when it clicks and the music, words, and playing all get it right, one is reminded of the energy and fun that made the band worth checking out in the beginning.

If you’re a fan of the band’s stoner charm and enjoy guessing lyrics to songs as they meander from your speakers, there’s fun to be had here.

Most of Fade Away drifts in and out of emotions and genres, failing to produce something truly resonant.

Where Fade Away really falls flat is how it lethargically, circularly insists upon the hopelessness of Consentino’s problems without elaboration. Instead, it fumbles for anecdotes that undersell what should be highly relatable emotions.

It may only be 27 minutes, but it still almost feels too long with how similar all of the songs sound. Best Coast unfortunately has slipped into a daze of becoming too comfortable with their sound.

Fade Away is the sound of a band clinging to the lost potential of their past for buoyancy, trying desperately not to drown in their own aimlessness.

Opening tracks "This LonelyA nice 7 track EP that very much keeps with the sunshine pop Best Coast provided on their first two albums. Opening tracks "This Lonely Morning" and "I Wanna Know" are the strongest tracks on show here and would fit in on their excellent debut album. While an enjoyable EP, "Fade Away" raises questions about the bands ability to stay fresh and interesting as they approach album number 3. While great fun, 2 albums and several EP's satisfies even the most avid fans appetite for Best Coast's brand of surf pop. The time is right for them to take a left if they can. Full Review »
