From the girl in "Till He's Dead or Rises" who has "the fear of Jesus on her side" to the way in which "First Air of Autumn" is an identical twin to Brighter's superior "Perfect Timing," the album sounds like the kind of holding pattern release that causes fan-bleed.

While hardly covering new ground or expanding their sonic palette, English Oceans is a welcome addition to the Drive-By Truckers discography as well as their best since 2008’s ’Brighter Than Creation’s Dark’.

Would 2014 qualify? I guess it would. And "English Oceans" is the best Rock & Roll record the Drive by Truckers have made since 2008. I've been "Hearing Jimmy Loud" over and over.
