Time will tell if a Death & Love Pt. 2 sustains the quality that Circa Waves have consistently delivered and if the good guys might win after all. In the meantime, newfound fans who enjoy Death & Love are advised to dive deeply into Circa Waves’ discography while waiting for a sequel. You’ll be glad you did.

Bold, confessional and full of vulnerability, the Liverpudlian quartet serve up poetry amidst the pain with a stellar offering of euphoric resilience.

The opening track, the explosive “American Dream” is a solid indication that, despite the inspiration for this particular album, it’s not going to be crammed with maudlin introspection. That infectious energy is carried through on the dance-punk vibe of “Like You Did Before” and the incredible album closer “Bad Guys Always Win.”

The album teems with very well constructed, uncomplicated, what-it-says-on-the-tin indie, with the runaway, synth-led, The Strokes-y Like You Did Before a highlight. [Feb 2025, p.103]

Given its significant personal story - not to mention its lofty title - ‘Death & Love Pt. 1’ could have been an opportunity for the band to explore meatier topics of mortality and aging; instead, this feels like a frustratingly safe exercise in walking well-trodden paths.
