Boris doesn't have any obligation to still be putting out records this captivating, but Dear most certainly captivates, and it has me excited for 25 more years of Boris.

Plenty of pallid indie math-rock imitators--from Godspeed! downwards--have attempted to do what Boris do here, and all have failed. Boris abide.

Dear is pervaded by a deep melancholy, but of a sweet, lovelorn kind, a looking back and a bitter-sweet attitude. Who knows if it’ll be their last record. If this is the case, it’s certainly a fitting send-off. [Aug 2017, p.49]

Dear is an album so monstrous, so monumentally loud that you can do nothing but let it consume you.

One seriously heavyweight record, even by Boris' far-reaching standards. [Sep 2017, p.92]

Dear could have been the end of the trip. But a quarter of a century in, Boris remain alert at the controls as they pilot their craft into uncharted galaxies, boldly going where no group has gone before.

Twenty five years into your career, Dear is proof that heavy not only still rocks, but that under your [Boris'] charge, it is unlikely to get boring.

Achieves a drifting, beautiful desolation that many of their peers lack. [Sep 2017, p.24]

If you dig deep enough, it's an album filled with surprises from a band that continue to impress.

Dear has generated a resurrection, or at least a strengthening of their life force; its creation inspired Boris to continue, turning what was supposed to be a goodbye into a forceful restating of this remarkable band's existence. [1 Jul 2017, p.50]

Dear is proof positive that this trio are far from running on empty; hopefully, the rest of these sessions will see release soon.

The new album finds Boris honing in on their most essential quality: their ability to wrest a kind of endless subtlety from thick layers of distortion and volume.

With varying strains of droning guitar sound carrying the album to a close, Boris’ sonic recognition of their roots pulses and shrieks, sounds that seem merely revisited and not completely inspired.

Dear is a complete doom album in its own right, and a very intruiging one, encapsulating all the treats of the genre through compelling songwriting and powerful progression.

It’s psychedelic in a chthonic way and sounds as though it was recorded live in an underground cavern. It’s easily their most minimalist recording, a carefully monochrome study in sludgy drones.

There are stray blasts of righteous melody, like the anthemic crescendos that erupt from the placid surface of “Beyond.” But most of Dear’s sonic earthquakes seem designed to rattle the bones, not catch the ears.

There's beauty amid the sonic desolation. [Sep 2017, p.116]

While intended as a love letter to their longtime fans, this 23rd LP from the Japanese rockers feels more like an optimal entry point for newcomers.

Ultimately, at a drone-heavy run-time of over an hour, Dear isn't much of a fun prospect for a summer album.
