Quite possibly their best offering yet. Somehow, they’ve managed to distill all the aspects of a great Nation of Language song — buzzing, evocative synths, buoyant basslines, and climactic, cards-on-the-table refrains from vocalist Ian Devaney — and scatter them across each and every track.

While their reference points are plain to see, Devaney stands out as a songwriter who isn’t afraid to dig deep into his psyche, revealing his true self in the process.

Between the quality of the album and Nation of Language's new label home, the project is on course to continue its upward climb.

Yes, they're flavour of the month, but they're the real deal too. [Nov 2025, p.88]

Dance Called Memory is the album where Nation of Language stop sounding like an amalgam of their influences, however winning that might be, and start sounding like themselves.

So: Dance Called Memory is a very good Nation of Language album – perhaps their most tonally varied since the debut – and for many fans that will be more than enough.

This certainly isn’t a bad album, but it leaves one wondering if Nation of Language, in their pursuit of warmth and humanity, have somewhat dialed back the dynamic edge that truly set them apart in the first place.
