There's nothing wrong with Lizzo's so-called "genreless," agenda-forward sound (nor did Pitchfork claim that there was, and I'm not one to side with their opinions as a rule), but it does lack a certain cohesion and maturity.

Yes, the album is impressive. But without much depth beyond its own self-absorption, it doesn't come on as strong as it thinks it does.

Lizzo has something to say, and a smart way of saying it ... but the potency of what’s here would seem more potent still if it had been allowed a little room to breathe ... Instead, Cuz I Love You keeps its foot pressed down hard on the accelerator for half an hour in an attempt to ram-raid the charts.

Lizzo's big label debut is interesting in that it's not interesting at all, where's the personality from Big Grrrl? The album alternatesLizzo's big label debut is interesting in that it's not interesting at all, where's the personality from Big Grrrl? The album alternates between Love on the Brain doo wop to Betty Davis funk. The results are mixed to say the least. The uptempos, Lizzo's usual specialty, are especially disappointing with their bland production, but there are highlight singles like Juice and Tempo. Lizzo also makes the mistake of confusing screaming with raw emotion. Lizzo may love U, but her bright personality gets lost in the dark here. Full Review »
