This is a record that proves, again, Joss Stone's considerable worth.
-
The second half succumbs to R&B overproducers, unfortunately, but for a while, she's on the right freedom trail.
-
She continues to hit each note with the precise amount of retro pomp that one would expect, and there are again moments when the '70s soul love affair gets a little carried away.
-
Colour Me Free succeeds about as well as Stone's other records: It's quite good in the up-tempo bits--check out 'Big Ole Game,' featuring the incomparable Raphael Saadiq--and a little soggy in the ballads.
