Collaborative Works is just as great as its constituent parts. [Nov-Dec 2015, p.66]

As a document of four years of on-off collaboration it is fascinating, and for fans of either artist it's pretty much essential.

The mammoth piece, as a whole, may seem disjointed and cohesive, but it’s bound by a musical friendship and an insatiable appetite to push boundaries in a dozen different genres. Long may Arnalds and Frahm tinker.

Considering the breadth of the collection, there are bound to be some missteps—the rhythmic drive of "Wide Open" and "W" feel particularly out of place, while some of the pair's piano work blurs together. Nonetheless, it's hard to complain about a release that puts these talented composers' collaborations all in one place.

If viewed as a unique, and relatively unmediated collection of experimental tracks rather than an album, Collaborative Works is an enchanting listen. What it lacks in structural polish, it makes up for in quality.
