Lady Gaga has dived head-first into loud, feel-good pop music after a (pretty good) visit to the world of acoustic guitars and ballads - and I couldn't be happier.

Chromatica takes heavy influence from 90s house music, with every song having a deep and driving drum beat, and enough layers to make a wedding cake. The lyrics on this project are hit-and-miss, with somewhat touching lines

The lyrics on this project are hit-and-miss, with somewhat touching lines on Fun Tonight, 911, etc. but then you've got kind of generic pop lyrics on tracks such as Stupid Love and Alice. But then again, you don't go into an album like this expecting wonderful poetry - you want a good time. And Chromatica certainly delivers on that.

I love the orchestral and classical opener and interludes; they add a bit of uniqueness and spice to a track-list otherwise teetering on the edge of repetitiveness. And I can't finish this review without talking about the closing track Babylon - a nod to Madonna's Vogue, with great wordplay (Babylon / babble on), a choir and catchy beat; it's definitely the best track on the album. The amount of times I've strutted around my house like I'm on a runway, going 'serve it, ancient city style' is insane.

The only thing stopping this being a perfect album in my opinion is the lack of experimentation (the most experimental track here is Sine From Above, which I don't even like) and maybe it could have done with some more personal and epic songs. Nonetheless, Chromatica is a joy to listen to and it's one of my favourite albums released this year.

It's not as good as ARTPOP but the album is really cohesive and the second part is so good. 911, Enigma and Babylon are the highlights of Chromatica. I can't help but dance when I listen to it, this album is just good and I'm satisfied.

Is it worth the wait? So-so. A perfect mix of the Lady Gaga we missed (early 2010s) and the current Lady Gaga. Some songs were worth to skip but a few were good bangers (Babylon).

    1. Alice - THIS SONG IS SUCH A BANGER! I love her vocals and the transition between the beautiful string arrangement and this heavy house dance pop song. The contrast is beautiful and clever. The song's lyrics are genius, even though they are not many lyrics. The robotic effect on her vocie during the second verse is amazing. Everything is so perfect. It deserved to serve as the lead single. The lyrics are quite repetitive tho.
    9/10

    2. Stupid Love - this song is defenintly weak if u compare the song to the rest of the album and a poor single choice. But it dont deserve all the hate it's reciving from the little monsters. The production is quite simple but good and nostalgic. It reminds me of the 80's/90's and her song do what u want. Her backing vocals during the track are very exaggeraded and it gives me an old gaga vibe. The song peformed live, is better. It has potential even tho it's quite weak. I dont like the sample during the chours or the childlike lyrics...
    6/10

    3. Rain On Me (with Ariana Grande) - THIS SONG IS A MASTERPIECE. I love everything about this song. It was a great second single but deserved more promotion and attention. The production of the song is amazing with disco samples made into a house pop edm anthem. Ever since the first listen, I've been addicted and it hasn't aged at all. The first chours with gaga's breathy falsetto is angelic and i could listen to it all day. Ari's vocie during the second verse is just as good and contrast as well with gaga's deep RAIN. ON. ME. vocals. My favorite part of the song is the last chours.
    10/10

    4. Free Woman - is a feministic anthem with a great message. The lead vocals are amazing. The backing vocals gives me classic gaga vibes (again) with the "be free" vocals. The song overall is weak and the production of it is quite basic and overdone. It feels like a drop i've heard before. The drop does not hit as hard as u want and it throws u off. The demo version is better. They should've kept the bridge at the end of the demo version.
    6/10

    5. Fun Tonight - this sad song is probobly the weakest track of the album. The lyrics are good but the melody in the chours throws you off. The track should've fit better as a piano ballad. The production dont fit the song, in my opinion.
    4/10

    6. 911 - this song is one of my favorite songs off the album. The production and the transition between chromatica II and this song is god tier. The dark vibes and gaga's robotic vocals throughout the song is amazing and is a genius connection to the lyrics. The song is amazing periodt.
    9/10

    7. Plastic Doll - is an underrated bop! The lyrics and vocals are immaculate. The production is a better version of Stupid Love and I love the concept of the song. Plastic Doll serves a really great message and the bridge of the song is just so good and gives me so much old gaga vibes.
    8/10

    8. Sour Candy (with Blackpink) - This song is also one of my favorites! Blackpink and gaga sound so good in this track. I love the deep synth. The song was born to serve at a catwalk. The lyrics are clever! The song aged like wine. It deserves a music video and single treatment.
    10/10

    9. Enigma - is, just like stupid love, really hated in the little monster fandom. In my opinion, this song isn't bad at all. It's def not the best but it isnt bad. Her vocals during the verses are soft and beautiful and during the chourses powerful and strong. The lyrics of the song is magical and the production is good. I really like the bass in the chours. It's quite underrated.
    7/10

    10. Replay - on the other hand is in my opinion overrated in the little monster fandom. The song is amazing and has a really 70's disco vibe. The lyrics in the 2nd verse is god tier. The production is also AMAZING, sampling Diana Ross. I dont listen to the song as often tho, so it gets a lower rating.
    8/10

    11. Sine From Above (with Elton John) - was a song that at the first listen, I didnt enjoy as much. But it grew on me. It's still not one of my favorites, but the song is still rather strong. The song makes me feel nostalgic and reminds me of a Eurovision song. Elton's vocals and gaga's harmonies are very good and I love it. I love the experimental drum beat at the end of the song.
    8/10

    12. 1000 Doves - deserved to be a ballad. The album version with the edm house beat does not fit the song. The ballad on the deluxe version is so much better. This song together with Fun Tonight, are the weakest songs off the album. The lyrics in this song is amazing tho.
    3/10

    13. Babylon - is also one of my favorites of Chromatica. Her dark vocals about strutting and serving it ancient city style are emesmerising. The lyrics are clever. I love the production and gospel choir backing vocals! This song is amazing and an amazing closing track to Chromatica. We deserved to hear the alternative version of this song tho.

This is Lady Gaga's at her new level musically and lyrcally. The album is her best since Born This Way & captures so many RADIO-FRIENDLY tracks yet not one of them is cheap or shallow. The interludes CHROMATICA 123, very very outstanding works, more impressed that Gaga co-produced them. And the transitions are so amazing. There are major keys in most of the songs, probably more than any of her record before, but lyrically, it's very deep and thoughtful. The album shows high and low, all that a human can have, not just an artist, she captures all the emotions and interpret them in sounds. We feel love, we feel pain, we feel shame, we feel confident, all of that. A true story that has finally been told by one of the greatest artists ever existed in history of human creature. Chromatica brings us a mature Gaga with firmer lyrics. The impeccable production brings the most refined air to songs with strong lyrics. It has some problems of continuity but it does not diminish the impeccable work that Gaga did in returning to the pop genre in such a well structured way.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "Free woman", Gala´s inspired "Alice" and "sour candy" are fantastic! old school italo 90´s dance music. "Babylon" and "Enigma" flirt with the Madonna´s Erotica era it is pure Nostalgia! "A 1000 Doves" is an acceptable EDM track not the best so far and the worst track is "Fun tonight" which sounds like a regular Eurovision song, definitely not a winner....The same for the duet with Elton John which at least suprises us with it´s jungle ending...."Stupid love" is in my opinion a bad choice as a first single which is not the case for "Rain on me" which with the track "replay", have a strong early 2000´s French touch house music vibe (Tribute to Kylie Minogue´s Fever era, stardust, mojo ect...) "911" is pure Lady gaga which is not a bad thing for people who have been enjoying her music from the very beginning (Not my case) I would say that it is her best effort yet. at least the most cohesive. I have been ignoring her music because it was irelevant and became quite pathetic with Joanne. Thanks to this effort, she finally convinces me a little bit more to be the artist so many people consider her to be. Expand

At times the high energy that pulsates through Chromatica can become debilitating, especially after hearing Replay. Although, Gaga takes the initiative to split the album up with an intro, and two interludes that follow through the rest of the album. But, no ballads on this record. That's what Joanne was for. There is still tons to unpack on this new album, as with any Gaga record, but this time she is definitely taking us somewhere new by providing bouncing melodic patterns whilst keeping familiar chord structures intact. It will be interesting to see how Gaga's latest album will perform commercially. Alice – 7/10 (Feels like its meant to be the thesis regarding her search for herself, a fun song, but not necessarily substantive/groundbreaking, this album isn't reinventing the wheel.)
Stupid Love – 5.5/10 (I wax and wane between loving and hating this song. Admittedly works better in the context of the album, but not a great lead single if you're looking for substance.)

Stupid Love – 5.5/10 (I wax and wane between loving and hating this song. Admittedly works better in the context of the album, but not a great lead single if you're looking for substance.)
Rain on Me – 8.5/10 (This is Gaga's biggest collaboration since Beyonce on Telephone, while not necessarily as bombastic, I think that marrying Ariana to a metaphor for tears was a very smart idea given her history with the imagery on sweetener, their vocal deliveries are wonderfully contrasted, and while it might not be the most groundbreaking pop record, its a fun second single, and shows Gaga's showmanship for writing a good pop hook remains.)
Free Woman – 6/10 (The self empowerment anthem feels a bit clichéd, and has been done before, and better, but its a fun song, feels like its trying to do a lot. A couple of clunky lyrics, "don't kiss me too hardly", and a bit generic feeling production bog the song down, but I can support the sentiment that Gaga is back to reclaim her dancefloor, as if she's left any gay bar playlists.)
Fun Tonight – 6/10 (Hate the pre-chorus, bit clichéd with the dissonance of the lyrics to the music, but its a danceable track.)
911 – 7/10 (The flat, robotic affect works really well here, in selling the song as Gaga being trapped in her anxieties, dependent on antipsychotics to function, gives a sense of the mental space she's likely been in while producing this album.)
Plastic Doll – 4/10 (Guilty pleasure, but this is as generic as generic gets. SOPHIE'S production died for this??)
Sour Candy– 3/10 (Sorry blinks, you deserve more than a 2:37 bite, this is barely a song, let alone a duet. Ariana and Elton got the more substantive features.)
Enigma – 5/10 (Dig her showing off her beltability, but otherwise feels fairly middling, the lyrics are a bit Clunky)
Replay – 7/10 (I like this, but its production feels "off", like I get "Music Sounds Better With You" vibes, but there's a dissonance between the vocal track and production? Like its going for a kind of chaotic effect, which I feel couldve affected the vocal track more, as the song's lyrics are kind of generic under scrutiny.)
Sine from Above – 8/10 (Most interesting track on the album, I really wish if this was the song influencing the entire thing that she'd gone for some more spacious/odd sonic soundscapes, made it feel like we were really in an alien world, rather than it feeling like Chromatica as a concept was tagged on last minute to make the album marketable.)
1000 Doves – 4/10 (Ends up feeling filler-y, clunky lyrics and LOTS of reverb.)
Babylon – 7.5/10 (So bad and campy in concept it ends up working, this maybe the one song on this album that feels "Gagesque", definitely can see the Vogue comparisons, but in the end its just a fun stupid song about gossip.)

Overall: I'd give this a total of 6.5 (rounded up), at the end of the day, its not a bad album per se, however I think Gaga is a victim of her own success, if you were expecting a clever dissection of the current political state of the world, this album is directed moreso inwardly, and doesn't necessarily explore ideas that are new to Gaga, but it is a welcome return to pop music. (I lowkey wish this was a high concept, space pop opera with alien soundscapes, as the alien planet of Chromatica feels a bit like tacked on marketing with zero reference within the songscapes.)

It is sad that a legend like Gaga has to collaborate with mainstream artists to have a “successful era” even at the expense of the quality of the art. Take Sour Candy, the result is a song where Gaga is unrecognizable: short track, small lines, flat progression, primitive rhymes filled with senseless lyrics just for the sake of catchiness. Gaga tries to save the song with different, unrelated flows but the result is a weird mess of a structure and song.

Also, personally, I would have removed from the project Stupid Love and Enigma that are strikingly similar and bring nothing new to the Chromatica experience. Free Women fails to incite much needed female empowerment to the extent that any lyrics added over the production would have been unnoticeable. Furthermore, Chromatica II would have benefited from additional string tension for a more remarkable transitional flow that drives our Chromatica ride to the next section of the project.

Favorite Tracks: Alice, Rain On Me, Fun Tonight, 911, Replay, Sine From Above and Babylon.

Unfortunately this album didn’t quite capture the same magic as her last record “Joanne” which took her sound in a new direction.
This one just bordered TOO HEAVILY on average dance pop.

There ARE some songs that do stick the landing. Most of which in the former half of the album. Such as “Alice”, “Stupid Love”, and despite my disliking of Ariana Grande... “Rain On Me” is also a pretty powerful track.

It’s sadly just those few tracks in the first half that fuel the album. The rest of it is either way too on the nose with symbolism, or fail to match the danceable power of the lead singles. Featuring 3 random orchestral interludes and a collaboration with Elton John that is honestly painful to listen to. Nothing about “Sine From Above” meshes well.

Gaga is insanely talented. One of the greatest voices in modern pop music. But unfortunately this album was more like her worst album “ARTPOP (2013)” rather than “The Fame (2008)”.

This album is a big disappointment, but it’s far from being the worst pop album put out during this pandemic, OR in recent years.

    This is a strong C+. Maybe a B– if I’m being generous.

I unstanned Gaga in 2014 when she got too boring for me. A jazz album, a country album, a generic buzz single and a mediocre soundtrack album didn’t interest me that much. I was waiting for her to return to her dance pop roots and that’s what she did with "Chromatica". Unfortunately, the results don’t impress me much at all. If you leave out the three (amazing) interludes I like half of the album. Six to be exact; "Alice", "Stupid Love", "911", "Sour Candy", "Sine From Above" and "Babylon". "Stupid Love" sounded messy and dated at first but it grew on me and now it’s fun. "911" is the only song that immediately clicked with me. I love the dark pop sound and the deep lyrics. It reminds me of her best album "The Fame Monster" (2009). "Babylon" is a nice fun track but it reminds me a lot of Madonna's "Vogue". A LOT. "Sine From Above" could’ve been perfect if it wasn’t for that awful outro and the 2013 EDM dance breaks. The rest of the song is so beautiful. The other half of the album...it ain’t it. "Free Woman" sounds generic as hell, literally nothing is happening in "1000 Doves", "Plastic Doll" and "Replay" are okay but nothing special and kinda dated, "Enigma" is so 2014 and I don’t even know what that dated mess "Fun Tonight" is. "Rain On Me" didn’t impress me either and it wouldn’t have been such a big hit without Ariana Grande. Very mediocre. Overall, this album is probably my least favorite of hers. I thought her return to dance pop would be great but it’s a disappointment. Half of the songs sound dated and uninspired. Even in the songs that I like there are parts that mess them up a bit. It's not terrible but terribly dated. "Chromatica" is only an okay album even though its concept (and artwork) could’ve made it great. Too bad. Favorites: 911, Sine From Above, Alice & Stupid Love Expand

This is a good and really cohesive album, but unfortunately with some flaws.
First thing first - this whole album could be a runway soundtrack and this is incredible. Each song is sonically connected to each other, so listening to the whole album is a nice experience, and if you want to listen to the songs separately - that's also fine. Lyrically is a basic Gaga level. The club/disco /90s

Lyrically is a basic Gaga level. The club/disco /90s vibe is really pleasing on the album.

The heavy production otherwise is really... noisy and flat at some point. I caught myself listening to the album and "missing" some songs because they blend with each other. I also have a feeling that Gaga wanted to recreate Confessions on the dancefloor experience with this album and somehow she made it, but (as I said) in a flat way.

+ Cohesive album with really cool sound
    + Good album idea
+ Great collaborations with other artists
    + Rain On Me

    - Some tracks are overproduced
    - The cohesivity of this album makes it flat at some point (lack of standout tracks)
    - Lyrics
    - Stupid Love

The nostalgia in the production — a blend of crisp digital synth textures and ringing grooves drawn directly from '90s house music — further bolsters the shadowed euphoria of a song like "Sour Candy," in which Gaga is joined by the K-pop girl group Blackpink; "Sine from Above," featuring Elton John, gets a similar friction from the interplay between their voices.

Infectious, exciting and even a little hedonistic during some of the most confusing of modern times, now’s never been a better time to get lost in this new destination.

Chromatica’s frank grappling with the vagaries of Gaga’s brain – and the way fame exacerbates them – ends up feeling much more real than touring dive bars with a guitar and a Stetson ever did.
