    Armed with an urgent edge that arrives with fuzzy guitars, an indie softness that ebbs and flows across the album’s entire runtime, and the succinct moments of lyrical genius and vulnerability Tigers Jaw have always delivered, Charmer is 2014’s best emo record so far.

    Though it’s laced with "Twin Peaks" references, Charmer ends up sounding more influenced by another example of uber-90s television--the one where people stop being polite and start getting real.

    There's casual grace in the band's winding and ultimately engrossing vibe and most of the earworms on the record stick like glue.

    It starts off strong... While the slow chug of "Divide" and the somewhat MOR jangle of "Teen Rocket" might have worked better as B-sides, they get it spot-on with "Wnat Would You Do." [Jul 2014, p.102]

    Musically, Charmer is a more polished and pop-oriented album than most of Tigers Jaw's previous work, but the core of their melodic style has changed little, and the moody urgency of the lyrics is as strong as ever.

    A downbeat effort from the usually explosive emo punk band didn't sit right with me at first, but as I listened on, they really showed thatA downbeat effort from the usually explosive emo punk band didn't sit right with me at first, but as I listened on, they really showed that they can be serious and took a step away from their teenage angst ridden lyrics to transform into something more beautiful. Although it's a step down from their self-titled album, it hints at a maturation of the band that doesn't come off as a desperate attempt to change. Also, the whole album is worth the listen for the Smiths' inspired album closer 'What Would You Do' and it lets listeners relax as it shows they've still got more tricks up their sleeve.… Expand

It was still great, and Tigers Jaw is still an amazing band. After their spectacular self-titled album, I think the hype for this album was very high, I think that is why I'm not as impressed. This album is a lot more chill and laid back then their previous stuff. They moved more away from the pop punk vibe to a indie rock vibe, which I enjoy in portions. I believe Tigers Jaw has done well, especially with only 2 members at the moment. I am excited to see what they do next.… Expand
